Unnecessary 100 series Land Cruiser
Discussion
Hi all,
At present, I m a PhD student who commutes 120 miles to university. As such, I have a sensible daily driver in the form of a D5 V70. Both my dad and I are keen outdoorsmen with a shared passion for field sports. He runs an X5 company car, and I have the aforementioned Volvo. We needed a reliable workhorse for the odd bit of towing over 2.2 tonnes, some very mild off-roading, and the occasional need for seven-seat capability.
This time last year, I was fortunate enough to spend three weeks at a university friends sugar cane farm in South Africa. They have more than 30 Land Cruisers in various guises. Despite having both a 200 and a 300 series among their personal fleet, alongside numerous 'bakkies' and classics, my friends parents still choose to drive the 100 series.
Our trusty steed took five of us plus a dog from Cape Town to Umbumbulu, with various stops along the way. Saddle tanks, effortless 100 mph cruising on the motorways, and hundreds of miles of dirt roads all covered in supreme comfort and luxury. Needless to say, the desire and intoxication of this seemingly infallible machine grew on me day by day; it became an essential part of the holiday experience.
Once back home, I began trying to persuade my parents that we should go halves on a 20-year-old car for the equivalent cost of a year-old Fiesta. Some time passed and, well, here we are with our investment. Naturally, we chose one of the most capable, reliable, obscenely large, and tirelessly thirsty vehicles ever made.
