AVANT UPDATE! (PAGE 2)

I'd always wanted an Audi 80, don't know why but just liked the look of them. A friend had a 1.6 petrol with a soon expiring MOT and I took it off their hands for £100 to see what it needed and to use as a winter runaround. I spent £400 getting it through the MOT with new tyres etc, serviced it and have used the car for a few months. With fuel prices increasing and the OH using the 540 daily for work we decided to look for a Diesel to save doing so many short trips in the BMW (cant be good for the engine either, 10 miles a day five days a week)

Having owned two diesel 306's previously we started looking for these but most have had hard lives, we thought about various diesel cars including Xantia's, Rover 400's and more but trying to get a decent derv for under a grand is difficult! We then stumbled across an 80 TDi Avant, after a quick look round the car we decided to take it. They are both pictured below, I've swapped the wheels on the cars as I obviously want to keep alloys!

When we got the Avant it had a towbar..

Which I swiftly removed and also painted the exhaust..

The back of the old one, I stuck an exhaust trim on to tidy it up..

Couple of interior pics of the Saloon, not got any of the new one yet..

Comparing both cars..

The saloon is a 1.6 8v Petrol SE with 100bhp - it has sporty ish seats, leather steering wheel, extra gauges, alloy's (had!) and a rear spoiler. 139k miles. It drives great for the age etc, really smooth.
The avant is a 1.9 TDi with 90bhp - its not an SE but does have the same seats, an after market electric window kit instead of factory but does have a factory electric sunroof. 145k miles. I need to find a new steering wheel as the later airbag wheel is awful!

The TDi drives smoother and feels quicker during normal driving, its really loud at idle but on the move its near silent in the cabin. Just need to sell the petrol now !

They are a classic shape, I do like them. Both look very tidy for the mileage.

Nice cars and they were well put together, even in those days.

That 100ps engine was great, the predecessor was of course the B1 Audi 80 GL - wonderful car, great performance and super economy.

Your avant shape was used in the RS2, was it not?

I can still remember going to pick up my mums from the dealer when I was four years old. M233 MNA, 1.6 petrol, dark green with black interior and five spoke alloys.

I absolutely loved that car, the 80 shape is lovely and it felt great rolling around in an Audi at the time (before they got big as well).

Yours both look in great condition and are in a great colour as well, really suits the cars, so nice to see people taking care of them.

I'd do anything to find my mums car and buy it if it still exists.

These look really smart for the money - how are they for rust etc? Interior looks like it would last forever!

My other half had an early 1980s B2 when I met her, was her dads old company car, it was a four pot and I am sure it was a GLE, she got it at about 90k by the time she was done it had over 280k, was still perfectly sound, some surface rust, and all she changed was the water pump and a couple of very corroded wheels. She gave it to my brother, someone stole it from him and used it as a getaway car. Last I heard it went for £120 at a police auction, brother never recovered it frown

Going by the DVLA site, its not on the road any more. HPI site still shows it though.

ASK MID site says its insured?!

Just did a little check of the two other sites you mentioned (I'd tried the DVLA site but it said they couldn't find any details at all). I'm not gonna pay for a HPI check just yet but cheers for helping out smile

Of course I wouldn't know where to start when it came to actually finding it. Last time I saw it was way back in the late 90's a couple of miles from where we live.

Love both of these, one of my favourite cars.

Audi 80 and the E34 5 series are very much on my , "when I buy a barn and put cars in it list".

What are they like to drive?

That saloon looks very nice indeed. There is a white one I often see parked up in Heaton, Newcastle Upon Tyne but sadly it's rusting away, nowhere near as tidy as this one!

My dad had a black 2.0l petrol Avant, great car, especially since he only paid £400 for it! Just kept on going, and I think they look nice too smile
