Sub 1 tonne warm hatch. The Suzuki Swift Sport!
Discussion
My circumstances have changed meaning I need a more practical car, so I've settled on a lovely little Suzuki Swift Sport to act as our little runaround car. It's in "championship yellow" with a 1.4 litre turbo engine, 975kg, and because it's a 2019 model it's just before they went mild-hybrid.
It should be delivered next weekend which I'm really looking forward to!

Well it arrived! But my gosh the yellow is BRIGHT in the sunshine and the girlfriend loves the look of it. I was tempted by white but I’d have always been wondering “I think I should have got yellow”.
Only plans are a CTC remap and potentially a different backbox to make it slightly louder. Nothing crazy because I don’t like OTT exhausts. Just something tuneful sounding.

That looks great! Yellow definitely suits it. I’ve always liked the Swift Sport. A mate hate one of the previous shape, and I had a short drive of that. Brilliant little thing. So good that Suzuki managed to keep the weight down with the newer car.
I fear you may be a magnet for bugs with that colour though!

I've owned a 2014 Swift Sport and test drove a 2018 model- the newer car is slightly quicker but, not as chuckable as the older model ( though that was probably the dealers fault for putting cheap tyres on it).
I do really like them them and you just know they're going to be reliable but, the Fiesta ST exists- and its just better.
The Swift is is lovely though, and still much fun to be had.

The fiesta might be faster but I wouldn’t say it’s a better car. The Swift is much nicer to drive on anything but super smooth tarmac and it isn’t common as muck. Nothing quite like the low weight of them!I do really like them them and you just know they're going to be reliable but, the Fiesta ST exists- and its just better.

I did briefly consider the Fiesta ST but I can’t get over the reputation it has unfortunately. Usually driven by idiots, a lot modified with horrible exhausts and windscreen decals, and they just seem chavvy to me.
I like to be a little different! I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Swift Sport on the roads but I’ll be keeping an eye out now! Plus the Swift Sport has a lot of great kit all as standard.

I'm still tempted by one of these to replace my current Swift which is now 18yrs old, a bit battle scarred but still a very good daily. Was my parents and my brother got a Sport of that gen because of it. He then went GT86 which he still has. I have a GR86 but like having a 2nd car for the odd tip run and it's easier for the dog and for going up North Wales for hikes where there's plenty of single track lanes and a Swift on Mid Wales roads is great fun too.
It definitely feels a last of a generation car as they'll never do a FWD car that light again. Same for the GR86. That's not happening again either.

I now a have a 21 plate SSS after having had a 2014 too.I do really like them them and you just know they're going to be reliable but, the Fiesta ST exists- and its just better.

If it wasn’t for the fact that the driving school I work with wanted me to get a newer car once I passed as an ADI I’d have kept the original one, much more fun.
Took the abuse from learners, clutch was holding up nicely, but the 21 one is a bit more “civilised”.
Looks great in yellow. Yellow was initially my first choice but that was vettoed so went for white.
Had mine for 6 years from new and still love it. This platforms ace is its weight. I have always had half a mind of using the 1.0t Swift a starting point of a performance daily, with a hybrid turbo they would have 180hp at 900kg!
My biggest bugbear with these is how thin the paint is. Each year I go round mine with a touch up kit.
May I suggest a powerflex yellow insert for the lower engine mount is more than worthwhile to improve traction in 1st and 2nd and improve gearshift feel. Using some M12 wsshers to compress the rubber gearstick cradle bushes also helps the shift.

Thanks for the tip! When I book it into CTC I’ll get them to fit one of those. Had a brief stint in one whilst I bought my house. Had loads of fun in it. Really chuckable.
I did the insert and the washers on the shifter. There's a rubber bung aswell to take away the last few mm of clutch pedal travel.
I fitted a blitz intake kit and ctc intake pipe on mine for abit of much needed induction noise. Front blitz strut brace also made a decent improvement.
Thought it drove really well and also was quite well specced. Wouldn't hesitate in picking up another one
I believe some models are experiencing cracked cylinder heads now which is something to look out for just a heads up.

Manual or Auto?
I had a yellow manual when I lived in New Zealand. Fortunately NZ never had the hybrid. Mine was a 2023 car. Sadly I had to sell when I moved to Australia. Now on the lookout for a low mileage manual in Australia. These are few and far between as most sold in Australia were autos. Here's a couple of photos of my old car on a gravel road back in the Bay of Plenty, New Zealand.
