They’re the prettiest 911 variant and the 991 interior layout and supplied tech is perfect for providing what you need while not being intrusive.
I had a 991.1 targa 4 and because they’re a bit heavy it felt underpowered and the scuttle shake was bad on the rubbish British roads. If you like a bit of oomph and noise the s or GTS would be the one to go for. But they have strong residuals and since they’re more of a cruiser they’re in competition with several other manufacturers.
When I was searching for mine there were never many available for sale so you may have to compromise on spec. If you haven’t driven one before I highly recommend that you do before pulling the trigger; aesthetically great but dynamically compromised.

They were produced for a max of 2 years and a bit of a specialist choice at the time hence the low numbers. I read there are fewer than 100 GTS .1 Targas. These were only produced for a year.
I searched for over a year for mine as I wanted a bright colour, 14 or 18 way seats, PSE and Bose. I wasn’t fussed about PDK or manual as both have their advantages.
The dream was a Sapphire Blue 4S. Ended up with Carmine Red GTS and couldn’t be happier. I absolutely adore it. No doubt not as sharp as a coupe, but for cruising around it is glorious. And I think it’s the coolest looking thing!

Tiff's original review of the Targa 991 is a manual - they were definitely made but extremely rare.
I owned a 991.1 Targa 4S PDK for about 18 months. Painfully cool to look at. Wind buffeting in them is awful above 50-55mph. The handling challenges discussed are very real. Pilot Sport 4Ss helped but I never felt very confident driving that car fast, and you had to push it really hard - it never felt that quick.
I would be hesitant to recommend it - glad I owned it but glad its in the past. I had a lot of problems with engine mount failure too, well known issue of that generation of porsche. Vacuum system was a total pain too, I had to completely replace that - also a common fault. I guess the 991.2 would probably have been a lot more driveable, but of course the noise of that 3.8 breathing normally was quite unrivalled.
