Im driving down a road about 25mph and try to switch into 3rd gear. I cant recall exactly what happened but it didnt go into third. Tried to go into fourth. Nothing.

Thankfully found a place to park 100m on the left. Parked and put car in neutral and took foot off clutch. Car stalls. Can't select any gear now.

Car is broken.

Im not technical.

What has happened? How much will a porsche specialist charge to fix? This happened just five mins ago. Ill call around in the morning but an indication of what is wrong and price to fix would be helpful

Thanks

Sounds like one of the gear selector cables may have snapped or popped out. Super common on Caymans / Boxsters, not sure about 911s. I'm assuming your car is actually stuck in 2nd but the gear knob is flapping around not doing anything, which is what happened to my Cayman. If that's the case and it's snapped it's a few hundred quid to have fixed. If the cable has just popped out of its retainer in the gear knob end it's a simple job to reattach it.

Not being able to select any gear despite seeming scary cost wise can often be simpler than one problematic gear, it’s often not inside the gearbox in the first case. As mentioned sounds like it’s stuck due bust linkage. Had that on a BMW.

Not IMS then? Serious question

As I said, I'm not technical and I read that happens suddenly as well..

No this is transmission side of things. I mean, unless you’re unlucky and the bearing needs doing at the same time lol! IMS is buried down in the rear of the crankcase behind the flywheel area. Not sure of symptoms as never checked but it won’t cause problems selecting a gear.

Cool, thanks

Thankfully I have a nationwide bank account which covers recovery to a garage in the event of a breakdown. They say they will recover to a garage of my choice. So maybe I can get this sorted in a day or two for £££ and not £££££(!)

Will report back

Yeah let us know. When they recover it just make sure you emphasise that it is actually stuck in gear. Just in case they try and winch it on without someone keeping the clutch in. Sometimes recovery guys can be a little eager and if he wobbles the lever and thinks it is in neutral then starts the winch it’ll drag the car in gear which could be really bad news.

If your IMS has pinged, your engine wouldn't run. The IMS goes round & round with the crankshaft & if it breaks, everything breaks. The gearbox bolts on to the end of the engine, so they're two different things. if your engine works, don't worry about the IMS for now at least.

Did you get it in the garage? What is the prognosis?

Spoke to specialist who couldn't accommodate me today. He says he thinks it's the gear band thing that has snapped. Cost is 4h labour plus the part. Probably towards £500 all in

I'm aiming to have the car recovered there for opening tomorrow. If it is as above, car should be ready for collection next day.

I will update

Foe those who know, does four hours of labour sound reasonable?

That is about right
However I would ask them to fit these linkage cables for a much tighter shift action once fixed
And then you feel like you are getting a better car back

As diagnosed above, it was the gear cables. £490 to fix at a specialist

Nationwide current account costing £13/month covered the recovery to the specialist

Car drives slightly nicer than before. I collected it.today because I was away for a couple of weeks
