997.1 CD changer alternative

Folks,

I have the PCM 2.1 with integrated phone and CD multi changer.

I see lots of posts about taking out the unit in order to exchange the CD changer for a Dension, or other form of input.

My question is, can this be done by unclipping the wire into the CD changer and doing everything in the front boot, rather than pulling the dash to pieces? Surely if the wires go from the back to the boot, then can they not be accessed at the CD changer?

I just want music really, not too fussed about the phone. I have a very friendly OPC who don't look too closely at the car when considering warrantee options so they probably won't mind if I remove the changer - unless, of course, the PCM then fails!
