997.2 drone and squeak as revs drop
Discussion
Hello Porsche Pistonheaders,
Looking for some diagnostic help... I am the lucky owner of a 997.2 C2S. Out for a drive in the sunshine this morning and noticed a strange noise which appears to be coming from the nearside rear. I've called my preferred Porsche indy and it is booked in there in a week or so but I'm interested in hearing if anybody else has experienced similar and can help diagnose myself or at least brace my wallet for the inevitable.
The noise is initially a fairly deep drone and only seems noticeable on deceleration as revs drop between about 3000rpm and 2000rpm. The noise sounds like it could be exhaust related but as the revs drop to 2000rpm is seems to become a higher pitched squeak, then goes quiet again below 2000rpm. The sound is also present when the car is rev'd out of gear as the revs drop but it's far less noticeable.
Any clues folks?
Thanks.

It does very much sound like it could be the silencer, except for the change to a higher pitched noise as revs drop lower.
The higher pitch sounds to me like a dry bearing - I guess the lower drone could also be? I'm pretty convinced the two noises are the same issue just making different noises at different engine revs.

I suspect it could be the water pump. Had mine replaced at the end of May at about 42k miles, which is about as long as they seem to last. It made a high pitched chirping sound, which I immediately thought sounded like a dry bearing.
The water pump is at the bottom left when you look under the rear of the car (you'll see the pulley and drive belt, and pump lurking behind), so if you get down there, while someone revs the car it should be fairly obvious if that's the source of the noise.
Failing that it could be the tensioner.
Good luck.

That does sound possible. Mine has just ticked over to 43K (thanks to Le Mans!) so similar in mileage. Is your car also a Gen 2?
The location you mention sounds correct also. I wonder if the water pump would make the deeper drone I am hearing as well as the high pitch you experienced?
I'll try to have a look/listen underneath this evening...
