How does that work, then?

When I picked it up I asked the salesman whether it had the same functionality as my Mercedes - come to a stop, press the brake pedal and it holds the car still until you touch a pedal. He said no.

Driving it at the weekend I stopped at a set of traffic lights and it illuminated "hold" on the dash.

I did a quick Google and the extract of the handbook I found doesn't make it obvious how to engage it. Anyone know?

If it is the same as my 718, a sharp stab of the footbrake engages the hold function i.e. come to a halt and then stab the brake pedal quickly this engages the hold function. It disengages as soon as you touch the throttle

I believe it only works when on a steep enough uphill gradient. Certainly that was my understanding and from the time I've spend driving our 911 it does seem to be how it works. Stop at an uphill junction and it comes on. Stop anywhere flat and it doesn't. I would much rather it just always worked but I'd also rather Porsche hadn't decided to fit their electronic handbrake the wrong way round so you press down for on and pull up for off - so the exact opposite of a normal handbrake and most other electronic systems I've used.

On the 718 it works on the flat as well. So the 911 system may be different

Hold should work on all surfaces and is essentially the same as the Merc system in operation. Just have to remember our old Honda doesn’t have it then I occasionally drive it.

I seem to recall it works automatically on gradients greater than 12%

718 auto holds on an incline and can also be used on the flat by pressing the brake pedal as with the Merc system.

Not so sure on the 911. Input your 911's model year here and type "hold" into the search box: http://www.porscheownersmanuals.com/2017-911-carre...

I'm fairly sure that as with my 981, the 911 of recent date will only "hold" on an incline, not on the flat.

991.1 and 981 had auto hold and it only enables automatically when on an incline.

991.2 and 718 have the same setup as merc whereby you can enable it manually by pressing harder on the brake, even on the flat.

I loved this on my merc SLK55, then missed it on my 981, but glad I have it back on the 991.2.

Use it all the time at traffic lights.

You could of course just engage the electric parking brake by giving it a quick press,

and then when you want to move off just press the accelerator pedal as you normally would in which case the brake will automatically disengage.
