Is a 992Gts and others worth in XS of £100k?
Discussion
Been looking on the used OPC site and the amount of cars now way in excess of £100k and so got me thinking are some of them really worth that much? Take the 992GTS for example they are all circa £130-160k used, now to me that’s a 991.2GT3 or a lightly used Turbo or even a new 718gt4 with a large amount of change to buy a new decent runaround.
Now I have driven a 992gts only for an hour or so mind and I haven’t driven a Porsche for a long time and I can honestly say that I didn’t feel blown away or overly impressed with it to other Pork I have driven in the past , yes it’s a nice car to drive but so is a BMW saloon I even got back into our JCW afterwards and thought this ain’t to shabby at a fifth of the price.
To me and I don’t mean to offend it’s just not worth north of £100k making something like a 718 4.0GTS seem such good value at half the price or am I missing something? I get the rear seats/911 thing but is not say a lightly use 991.2 better proposition and some might say a nicer car?

looking forward to test driving a Carrera T to see how they compare.
Like you say a Gts is a nice car to drive but then so is a base 911! At £120k plus I want to be blown away and feel I am in something special!I have a T on order and I think at c£105k new (my spec.) I think it is not too bad price wise (I wouldn’t want to spend anymore)but even so compared to say a new 718gt4 at £85k (my spec.) even then it seems a tad on the expensive side. And I am sure they would cost the same to build!
Out of interest, I looked up the base price of a 997 GTS when they came out, and they came in at around £77K + options, let's say £80K. Inflation adjusted to now (including the craziness over the past few months) that's about £115K (or £105K to Jan 22). I agree with the OP, it feels to me that you have to pay a lot more for what you get and there are much better value cars out there, but maybe it's just inflation...?

Yes the 997 gts was about £80k all in but even some of those were discounted yet the 997.2gt3 was of a similar price I can’t remember exactly how much but I do remember 997.2gt3rs at about £95k.
Now we have the GT3 in excess of £200k it’s just crazy money!
I would understand if there was huge leaps in quality but sadly older cars seem to be better screwed together and of a nicer quality feel

I know it’s a basic price without options but the fact Mclaren now have the Artura starting at £185000 to me makes the GT3 current prices look ridiculous, let alone GTS at £130000+
There are loads of GTS’s in the network and on Autotrader. Does anyone actually buy them and drive them these days ?

Anyone would think OPC’s have queues of people who buy the first examples every new model to run it for a month or two….almost like they’re just buying the cars knowing they won’t run them for very long.

I have a 992 GTS, first owner from new on 1st Sept 2022, driving it properly and completed a trip to Germany and back visiting Nurburgring and Porsche Museum Stuttgart. Covered just over 3000 miles so far. Absolutely love it and my best car to date. I have a road trip planned for next year with a friend and his AM V12 Vantage S

Have 911s ever been that special? Save for say the GT/RS cars? I didn't think that was their brief. For me, they are the every day, usable sports cars and the market seems to show that there is a lot of value in that proposition - cue the banal retorts of "well if they're selling at that price, then..." Their price has carried on climbing to the to the kind of levels now where they are in the same conversation as some very special cars, and I too struggle to see the justification. In trying to be all things to all people, it's always going to be a compromised car, and therefore were I in that position, I'd buy something properly special and have another car as a runaround.
It's not just Porsche though jacking up their prices. It's the way of the World at the moment and across all car manufacturers. For example, in 2013, I bought a brand new BMW E92 M3 Coupe and it was £53k. In 2017 I bought a brand new BMW F82 M4 Competition, that was £65k, In comparison, a new current gen M3/M4 is circa £90k-£95k for a good spec car, without any discount applied.

Looks like they are becoming a little more sensibly priced

Agreed on new prices. It's the overs that made them look even worse when compared with things like the 570S that could be had for <100k lightly used. How would you compare the 992 GTS to the M4? Despite ballpark power, the 992 feels like it'd be light years ahead I suspect?Edited by Schuey_911 on Friday 16th December 12:37

Hi,Edited by rawenghey on Friday 16th December 14:27
Honestly, a different league! And that's coming from a bit of a BMW fanboy of cars and motorbikes. I'm well and truly in love with the 911.
Porsche say the 992 GTS has 480 hp, but I swear it feels more like 520 hp ish from my bum dyno. My M4 Comp had a Stage 2 tune and I was running 555 hp, and I can confidently say the 992 GTS would beat the M4 Comp in any situation. Drag race, 2nd gear pull, 3rd gear pull, there is just no lag with the Porsche, pretty much max torque from around 2000rpm and it pulls hard right the way to the redline, feels like a rocket ship. I can only imagine what a Turbo S must be like!
In terms of handling, again the Porsche would run rings around the M4. I optioned RAS (Rear Axle Steering) on mine, and it makes a remarkable difference to the handling. You can clearly see the difference between a purpose built sports car vs a high performance coupe/saloon. Surprisingly, even in day to day driving, the Porsche is more comfortable and compliant than the M4 Comp. The M4 Comp was quite bouncy bouncy on our British A and B roads, whereas the Porsche deals with the bumps much better, even with the 305 width 21 inch rear tyres! Also, the Porsche is about 70-80kg lighter than the M4 Comp DCT was, which helps with the dynamics.
There does seem an awful lot of very lightly used 992 Gts on the market. I think many were bought to flip but the market is changing daily and don’t think people are prepared to pay overs on these.
Agreed that all new cars are now crazy money, think the Gts would be great value at around £100k but as mentioned have lots of competition at £130k+.
