Backing out of my garage today, I noticed fluid over the drive, all freshly "sprayed" where I had just backed out. It does seem to be forced out at some pressure, and only when the car was on a slight incline. It's not like it’s a small amount look at the mess.

First panic was engine oil!! No it’s not oil.
It tastes sour, a little bit like gin, so suspect brake or clutch fluid. I even tasted the power steering fluid to rule that out. I will have to wait till morning and get a volunteer to help out while a crawl about trying to find the source.

As you can imagine I am a little grumpy right now, and certainly not enjoying my TVR experience.

Brake fluid reservoir is fine and full. Is there a separate clutch reservoir that I can't see? I have had a tourch under, and round the pedals yet can't see anything obvious.

Well, your luck just keeps getting better and better doesn't it mate!

Sounds like the clutch cylinder has given up the ghost after all those long months of inactivity....

I think the brakes and clutch share the common reservoir, so I don't know why it should be full - esp. with the amount on your driveway, but a small amount of any fluid can go a long way and look like a lot (as anyone with a baby will tell you! )

Shitty luck I know - but stick with it.....you must be due for a break!!!!

Neill Hi,

That has tipped me over the edge with it, its up for grabs now. Passion=LOST!!
I shall be very angry if the box needs to come off to fix that, it had a new clutch 1000 miles ago, and its just been re-assembled as you know.

Noooooo!!!

Don't do it! Why should the next owner get all the benefits of your grief?

Have you checked where the fluid is coming from? Bellhousing or pedal area?

It may not be as bad as all that. I'm sure Paul will do everything he can to ease your pain.

Nil desperandum mate!

That's coolant Neill,

It's a relief its not the brakes, and suspect I over filled or spilt coolant into the front panel area. I am off to run it about and re-check the level. It' one of those occasions where I hope I have done something wrong!

I had a second "tasting" of the mess on the drive, and presumed as it hadnt dried - evaporated like water that it was oil based. But we seem conviced its coolant. (tastes like gin, a bit bitter with sweet after-taste)

THIS CAR NEEDS TO MAKE FRIENDS WITH ME!

Leaky/overfilled screen wash reservoir? If you've a lot of anti freeze (gin taste....I'm not an alcy, honest) in the mix it may have dissolved some oily grime in the engine bay that then leaked out when you moved the car leaving an oily deposit on the ground.

I really hope it is something simple - mine has done the same thing with both coolant (after I thought it needed a bit, but the car had other ideas, and just spat out the excess!) and washer fluid (which just seems to leak when it feels like it).

Don't give up - you haven't had any decent weather hooning yet - that will make you forget all this sh*t!!!

Eh, it tastes OK, beers bad for you too!!! (Just dabbed finger in it so nothing like sneaky brown bag swigging)

Got back from work today, and noticed a leak on the drive, parked it outside, and left it. All of a sudden it let go, luckily while I was home. Gushed out!! Ran about trying to find a tray that would go under it, and had to use Joannes special lasagne cooking crockery. ssssshhhhhh!!!

Out with the radiator, which was very easy, and expected to find a hole.
The hoses were OK. No sign of damage, so it could be leaking in the end caps.

I need a new radiator by the looks of things, I doubt that these are repaired easily.
If anyone has one, give me a shout!!!

I am off to measure this one up, and produce the engineering drawing for it, so when we need another, and TVR dont have them, we dont get stuck!!
(Will not worry about copyright issues, I am not doing this for financial gain).

Justin

Ever thought of a career in childrens television?

How are you going to fix it then?
Chewing gum or the ever popular Chemical Metal?

...oh, and a yoghurt carton and some furry string...

Double sided sticky tape should do it Neill -

I shall probably weld this up later, its not hard to fix, if it was under the black plastic end-caps, then it would be terminal.

Shame I don't have a "heres one I prepared earlier" scene to show you.

Justin,

So sorry to hear the cars pushing you over the edge slightly! I will sell mine and buy yours, its the Dogs danglies with all the work you have had done.

I am still smilling like a baffoon and enjoying my machine, a slight singular tappet slightly noisey but hey ho! I am going to cook it until it blows, the sad thing is I could do it easy but looking forward to a full rebuild

I am going to post a question later and would like yours and nellys advice on it!

(I am really looking forward to seeing your machine pur around Kettering)

Catch you at Santa Pod!

Paul

Fixed the hole dear liza. Topped up with nice new Mobil anti-freeze and off for a short 3 mile drive. Got to 104deg water temp, so pulled into a garage, Had to put about 2 litres more in, nothing dripping out under the car so must have had an air-lock. Checked twice before driving off too.

Anyhow, after a short drive later steam was blowing out of my vents, although I had only 86 water, and 67 oil displayed.
I might be getting paranoid now, but I have had the bonnet off twice today, and Joannes a little bit upset with me as she has to help. (Estimate is been off 11 times in two weeks now)(or it's something to do with the lasagne pot, I suppose).

I had topped water up a little too much and brimmed it.
Should I see steam (It is cold out)? Neill - your good with stuff like this.

I assume you're talking about your bonnet vents and not the heater vents in the car?

If so - don't worry, as the water will find its' own level.

When (stone) cold - you should see the tiniest amount in the bottom of the filler neck (couple of mm). Any attempt at putting more in will result in a wet driveway!!!

Im having exactly the same trouble with mine.....

A couple of weeks ago I had a leak from the passenger side under the grill, right under where the window washer bottle is..... This bottle has now run out so thought it could be that.

Last night I got the leak again when left on the driveway, this morning my coolant level was correct - from stone cold just a few mm in the pipe. I topped this up until it was about 1-2 cm in the neck of the pipe and warmed her up, underneath the car when I pulled away there was a puddle!!! This came from underneath where the radiator section meets the main body of the car.

Its definately not oil, and takes a long time to dry, it tastes kind of sweet, and seeing as Id just topped up it must be coolant!!!!

From looking through the grill I can see a small damp patch on the radiator, however the car doesnt overheat (Water temp gets up to about 95 - if that!)

If it is a leaky rad (I hope its a hose) is it possible to repair usually???? Car will I hope be ging to Austec for a few bits this week so will let you know, shame really as she is running great and its been dry but have this playing on my mind!!!

Paul - Ask away mate!!

Neill it is the bonnet vents, and possibly the cap, but I am worried that the water pump isnt going round, the head gaskets gone, that Taliban rebels are living in my cylinder bores, and a supernova is going to wipe out civilisation.

I did find a penny today, picked it up and made a wish!

Don't worry mate - this is perfectly normal paranoia - everyone in the Universe has that!
The hot engine thing was just an airlock, and the steam thing was just overfilling.

There's no voodoo involved with these cars / engines - indeed most of the niggles we all encounter are just quirks - nothing more.

I know it seems that all you are doing at the moment is digging a bigger and bigger hole - but trust me - persevere and you will be rewarded (as soon as it warms up a bit ) like nothing you have experienced (in an automotive sense at any rate!). Life really is too short to deny yourself such pleasures!

BTW - tell the missus she is definately NOT alone! My Missus could do the bonnet thing with her eyes closed by now!

No im fine now, no questions: it was my key fob is dodgey and cant get in my motor sometimes, quite frustrating. But got one on order now.

I am thinking of running mine at Santa Pod, slowly getting more confident fancy a crack against Nelly! Will you be running yours Just?

Flying around Kettering today in mine, but i was the only one out!
