West Yorks Newbie. First TVR. Slave cylinder gone in 2 weeks
Discussion
Hello PHers
Purchased my Tuscan from private guy last weekend, so I thought I’d say a quick hello as I’ve been watching this forum for some time now.
Car is late 2000 X reg Red Rose in reflex purple. 37,000 miles with no known rebuild. I knew the owner of the vehicle prior to the guy I’ve just bought it from, so I’ve got some idea of its history. Engine seems strong, with 48psi @ 2000 rpm, so hopefully will avoid the dreaded SP6 issues!
The car has put an immense smile on my face already, albeit there’s only the Otley and Burly in Wharfedale by-passes where I can get it up to any sort of sensible speed.
The car has now decided not to go into gear. Quick check underneath identified clutch fluid pissing from gearbox, so new slave cylinder needed me thinks. 2 weeks…first problem…bummer!!!
As the previous owner had spent a lot sorting the car out, I’m hoping this will be a one off [in the near future at least].
Planning a driving holiday down to Monaco to Italy to Germany some time next summer.
Can’t wait….

Simon,
30+K and no rebuild...awesome news mate....truely. Has it had a new clutch fitted? based on what I have read they seem to go at around the 20K ish mark, either the friction plate and/or the pressure plate. The slave cylinder seals are also a known weak point. There are a few indies offerring alternative solutions tho. May I suggest you ring round and see whats on offer. Has the car got the original suspension fitted or after markets?
Cheers

Nice colour and model my man! Not that I'm biased!
If it has not had a new clutch it's probably worth chucking a new one in at the same time, they seem to go anytime from 20000 miles upwards depending on how it's driven. You can also buy uprated slave seals from www.track-car-solutions.co.uk that might get you a few more miles before the slave goes again.
As for the engine, when were the valve clearances last checked? If the cams/followers/valves were ok then and it's not using more than 1 litre of oil per 1000 miles(check when engine hot) and it's not blowing blue smoke from cold start or under acceleration then you have nothing to worry about, just keep on truckin!
Have fun and remember to warm the bastard up before you nail it!
cheers

The car suffered the usual clutch woes, but lasted slightly better than expected...around the 28k mark.
The previous owner fitted an AP racing clutch, which has just over 9k on it. I can tell the clutch is still good...no sign of slipping once engaged.
Valve clearances checked at last service; timing chain tightened. John at SSCC reports it as a very good, well maintained car. Previous owner spent £7.5k in 18 months on mainly incidentals, 4 new tyres and 2 services. Fingers crossed (although hopefully not the ones in the engine), once the slave cylinder is replaced I've got a good 'un, at least for the rest of this year.
Off to the in laws in Salisbury this Bank holiday, and was rather hoping to take Trev. Sadly it'll have to be the P reg Laguna with 169k miles on the clock which has never missed a beat!!!
Anyway, at last I'm really glad to be part of the fold. It seems to have been ages in coming, but I'm sure it'll be worth it...

Was floating around Headingly last Saturday...before gearbox woes. First outing of the car. Had to take Dad into Headingly...Scared him senseless by Lawnswood school, followed by comments like "you need to be careful" and "how many points" blah blah blah.
Anyway, was really chuffed as I came off West Park roundabout and wasted a Mini Cooper S. Thought those things were supposed to be quite quick???
I'll now be keeping an eye out for all other Tus's in the W. Yorks area. Speaking of which, got flashed by a blue one W...TVR at Menston traffic lights on Tues evening (whilst trying to establish cause of said gear box problem).

Tuscans are slightly more than just quite quick though. Same weight as the Mini but around 2x the power. Reminds me of when someone else on here said that as they'd owned a T350 they were used to nippy cars which made me smile.
If only 9k on the clutch assembly probably ok to keep. I had a slave replaced in Dec 04, then the clutch 12 months/8k miles later and ended up having another slave put in to be on the safe side. Just get them to examine the pressure plate fingers carefully when replacing the slave as it's these that tend to go rather than the friction plates wearing out. Who's doing the work for you?

Not sure who's doing the work at the moment. Have spoken to HHC (Drive Style) who have quoted £580 for the slave cylinder replacing. Previous owner got much of his work done either at HHC or SSCC. Owner before that (my mate) is a mechanic who purchased all his parts from Jim @ HHC and fitted them himself, so at this point a number of options are available.
Anyone any comments on local (to W. Yorks) places to get TVRs lovingly repaired and looked after?

Hi Simon! Congrats on your purchase. I'll have to keep an eye peeled for you. I am often buzzing around the area (or at least, I will be when I get my car back from its head-rebuild) as I live down at Victoria Mills at the moment. Also, you'll probably see Callum (MacTusc) about as he works down this way. Forums | Tuscan | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
