Smell of petrol?

If the car's left sitting in the Sun at all on a hot day after being filled up, the petrol will expand (and quite often overflow a little around the nozzle. Had this happen a couple of times.

Quite possible.
When I used to fill my old Tiger Supersix fully up on a red hot day, a small amount of petrol used to leak on the garage forecourt via an overflow pipe, but on a normal day it never did it....

petrol is expanding from the tank due to full tank and heat into the charcol overflow canister located in the o/s front wing.
If it happens only for a short period after filling up in the heat, then all is fine. If it happens at other times and petrol is actually dripping from the front o/s wing you may have a blocked/problem with the hose to the charcol canister or an engine problem as excess inlet petrol will be dumped into the canister.
