What to buy... advise?
Discussion
I'll be looking for a 2nd car in Dec/Jan, and will have around £15-17K to spend. On my wanted list is an early Tuscan. However, for that kind of money... I could get in to a fairly recent Elise 111s. Looking for opinions.
I'm expecting to get biased opinions, so am posting a similar question on the Elise forum to even things up. Which should I go for... and why? Both completely different beasts...
It will be a 2nd car, but I'd be looking to use it 2-3 times a week... approx 6K miles per year. Mixture of Sunday blasts and the odd track day.
On the driveway, the Tuscan would give me a bigger smile i think... it has the presence, and the sound... and I like the interior (always loved the Tuscan). The main issue is the costs to keep it on the road (not talking about fuel/insurance/tax). Servicing is sky high, and if it needs fixing it could cripple me. What sort of costs to you guys budget annually to keep your Tuscan on the move (services and repairs).
So on that basis, the Elise sounds the sensible choice. I want a car I can use... and that doesn't spend most of it's time in the garage while I save up for the repair bill.
I used to own a Fisher Fury with a 1.8 Zetec with all the trackday gadgets... and it was fun. However, it did run out of puff higher up the mph range which I would possibly start getting annoyed with. I know the Tuscan will be just getting in it's stride at that point, and have concerns that the Elise 111s may start to be wheezing.
I guess the main thing holding me back on the Tuscan here, is the fact that it could ruin me if I unwittingly end up with a bad one.
Thanks very much.

What kind of annual budget have you used to keep yours mobile? From what I can see, it would be servicing of approx £800 every 6K (so every year for me). Plus anything needing sorted. I could possibly swallow up to £1500 per year. Anything over that would be sore.
How much are you looking at for a rebuild?

I apologise if I seemed a bit flipant in my previous response, it just seemed as if you had sumed it all up for yourself anyway.
The cost of a rebuild varies depending on what is wrong and how far you want to go with having things put right. 5 grand sorts out the top end, another 5 grand sorts out the bottom end. There are a few indies doing Engine work, but only one who are capable of replacing every internal component with new designed parts. All which have been designed for reliability, an improvement in performance and efficency as well.
Longer term the Tusc will cost more to run and will not out handle an Elise on a twisty road, but it will leave an Elise (very quickly) on any open road. There's one lucky member on here that has a Sagaris and an Elise, may be he will pass on his knowledge of living with both.
For me a properly sorted S6 is the kiddy...
Good luck

Thanks very much... heart says a Tuscan.... head says Elise. My thoughts were that if I could get a 2000/2001 Tuscan with some mileage under its belt... and maybe a recent rebuild, then perhaps most of the problems would have been sorted out. Maybe then a budget of £1.5K annually would have been enough to keep it going (to cover service & and minor repairs).
Been hearing over on the Elise forum that a 111s won't be as quick as the Fisher Fury I had previously... so last thing I want to do is take a plunge thinking I'm being sensible, only to regret it because I hanker for something quicker.
It's a dilema... albiet a good one, but not a very easy one.
Andy.

Andy, you can have my Tuscan for £17,000, its had a nice rebuild, by one of the best. Fresh MOT and TAX. small scratch in the front, few chips here and there. Silver Stardust with black interior. Might have to put a deposit on a house soon, so will have to start loosing nice things. Shame!
