I have an irritating noise in the car when I lift off the accelerator. It's more pronounced in 3rd or 4th gear. It's an odd sound (?caused by a vibration - although I can't 'feel' anything). I know I'm not particularly describing this very well, but anyone got any ideas?

Hi,

I have a very noticable vibration coming off 3rd/4th but only within a certain rev-band (2400-2800ish). Sounds/feels like it is coming from under the middle/left-side of the drive-train. Is this something similar to yours perhaps?

Could be Andy. Does seem to be in a fairly narrow rev band. Have you tracked down the source?

Well actually, and this is very good timing, just spoken with Racing Green again who have been on the phone to the factory. After double checking various possible reasons, they have come to the conclusion that it is "just one of those things". By ruling out engine mounts, exhaust runs, manifold etc and also the drive-train/gearbox/clutch etc, it leaves only one the crank or lower engine itself. Now, my engine is a Red Rose and there was another vehicle in that RG were looking at recently that had the very same issue which was an S spec so both engines should theoretically be better balanced around the crank etc. so this is unlikely to be where the problem is and to conclusively rule this out, the engines would need to be stripped and statically/dynamically balanced to see if this does solve the problem - big cost and no guarantee. The general concensus between RG and the factory is that it is "one of those things" that affects a good many vehicles but is not something to worry about and just has to lived with.

They do not feel it should deteriorate and is not indicative of something suddenly leaving the engine block at break-neck speed....

Personally, I am pretty happy with this response and will just keep an eye on it. If it does start to get worse then I will review my options again at that point. I am also likely to be replacing the clutch within the next couple of months so will see if anything can be done or is improved by that then.

Cheers

Andy

PS: naturally, any other input is appreciated...

hhmm, will check this next time I drive my Red Rose with the steel crank built to latest Sagaris spec.

From what you say it is very noticeable? I would personally want this checked further unless it was a minor vibration. I was told the steel crank engines have a slight vobration about 2500 rpm, so maybe that's it?

Hi Whitey,

I am not sure if this is a common thing or not but there appears to be at least 2 Tuscans about with a similar "problem". The vibration is quite noticeable and really kicks in when coming down from around 2800rpm to 2400rpm in either 3rd or 4th. It will do it in 2nd too but the rev band is a lot narrower. Any touch of the accelerator during the vibrations causes them to stop and so does changing up a gear (naturally). When accelerating through the same rev band, the vibration is there but only very very slightly, much more pronounced when coming down.

It's a real head-doer this one but it looks like I don't have many options at the moment...

well mine definitely does not do that. An engine builder at the factory told me what I described below, but as a very very slight vibration/harshness, not what you are describing.

Good luck in finding it, I had a similar noise recently when my de-cat pipes were fitted, which was the exhaust touching the gearbox, remember the exhaust expands loads when hot.

My money is on the exhaust!

good luck

Yeah - I can't help thinking the same thing but it has been checked, what do I do....confused We are up to Liverpool and over to Dublin this weekend so will see how it goes then and get back on the case next week.

Have had this problem turn out to be near side engine mount failing, engine drops down 30mm causing unusual vibration at defferent times and temp .
Probably oil return pipe from sump hitting under tray' worth a look at same time especially if your over 25000 road miles or 12000 road and track miles

I also immediately though engine mount when I read the first post, but the garage checked it? Maybe it's just started to break...

Yeah, they checked the mounts, no issues there. We'll see how we go next week,
