oil pressure (again)
Discussion
Story:
Oil pressure sender was changed for the upgraded TVR Power one a few weeks back.
This rectified the dodgy readings were were getting (pressure readings jumping wildly) and they were steady and all seemed in order.
Oil and filter changed (for Silkolene as rec by Opie Oils).
Readings are ok at revs but when it's at idle (circa 800rpm) and the oil is hot, the display is flashing, oil pressure warning light is on and the reading is 0psi.
Pressure still picks up ok when it's revved and is in accordance with the manual (ie at 2000rpm its above the minimum pressure which I can't remember off the top of my head).
Any clues as to why we're getting a 0psi reading at hot idle?

As part of the project with my car Craft have installed 4 guages Oil Pressure, Oil Temp, Fuel Pressure and Boost Pressure.
The first 2 are as a result of not being able to rely entirely on the standard senders and display info. I would recomment anyone installs these 2 guages as back up.
However in your case you do not specify the Silcolene oil spec used, if it is a very thin oil (less than 10 SAE) then personnaly I would immediately replace it for at least a 10-40 or 15-50 SAE and recheck your hot running oil pressure. You also do not say if the car is, or is not using excessive oil. Generally a hot running low oil pressure and excessive oil consumption are an indication of excessive engine wear.
I do not believe it gets cold enough in Uk to warrant the use of very low SAE oils, a 10 or 15 SAE is quite adequate and the little that it offers in fuel economy will be cancelled out by other factors.....to name but 1, your right foot...!
Good luck

Can't remember the viscosity but I know it was based on the fact that we're up in the North east of Scotland! I think it's 10-40 though.
The car has never used much oil (only dribbles of a top-up at a time) and has not used any since the oil was changed. It is checked properly and regularly. It's always warmed up properly.
The oil pressure sender is the upgraded one but could the problem be in the ECU end or the pod end?
I have to say that it does not sound as if your engine is worn at all but I really do not want to speculate further. For my own piece of mind I would install a temp gauge inplace of the sender unit in the side of the engine and see what that reads with a hot engine. If it reads a healthy figure 20psi (ish) plus, then the motors most likely fine and the fault is elsewhere.....and I have to say I would still suspect initially the sender unit. However if the temp gauge also reads low it could be anything else from the oil pump up over....
Sorry not really much help offered....best get it looked at by someone capable.

We had a new oil pressure sender on our Tuscan about two or three months ago. Ours has been reading 99 psi at cold. We contacted our indi who did the work and he has told us that there has been a batch of faulty sendors and it needs replacing again. This might be the same for you.
thought about that, but TVR Power assured us this was the updated sender and that it was the 'reliable' version. Seems weird that it reads ok at any kind of revs except for idle.
