took my cats off this weekend with a view of fabricating some decats and keeping the originals for MOT time. to my horror found that they were completely melted at the front end. just wondering if this likely to have caused any engine damage?? assume they must have been like that for some time as i would think it would take a lot of heat to cause this to happen........... does sound real nice now tho!!!!!

A more common occurence is that the substrate disintegrates, however my cats had melted and it was found that the fuel mixture was running lean in the higher rpm range. Just to be on the safe side it maybe wise to get your car checked out on a rolling road, its possible your engine is running slightly lean at in the upper rpm range, if it is pinking at high revs then it most certainly would suggest it is running lean and should be seen to asap, better to have peace of mind Cats don't melt for no reason.

thanks for the suggestion. think i will heed that advice as off to inverness this weekend with a bunch of north east PHers so cant have anything out of the ordinary happening can we! cant wait!!

Hi Dan,
Did you end up making your own decat pipes or did you just empty the existing cans?

Hi Andy, the Decat pipes will be made this week. Just waiting for the 4" x 2" stainless reducers to be delivered (due tomorrow) and then I'll fire up the old TIG set and weld 'em up. They should be on the car together with the new chip by the end of next week.

What have you done for the flange on the 4" end?? I have one original cat pipe (without cat) which I have as a pattern. I can get the pipe made, just wondered about the flange end??
