LCD instrument/display malfunction

The LCD display shows fault code "A" when the car is stationary. When the car starts moving, this changes to the display that shows revs, speed, oil pressure, oil temp & water temp. But the display knob doesn't function so I can't change the display mode or rest the display. Any thoughts on what the cause is likely to be?
