Guys, a close friend of mine is considering a very nice Tuscan 2. For me, one negative is that it's the 3.6 unit.
I've used SEARCH on here but nothing relevent comes up. I'm a bit bemused as to why the factory would have been using 3.6's in the late cars. Was the development and output up to scratch in comparison to the 4.0, or was it a case of leftover 3.6's from some of the early T-cars? We need as much info as possible in order to make an informed decision. Would a 3.6 adversely affect your decision to buy or not? In your opinions, would a 3.6 be worth less than a 4.0 on resale? Other than the obvious -0.4 of a litre, what other characteristics are different between the two units? Thank you in advance for any replies.

Had the same dilema when looking for mine, drove Tamoras (all 3.6's) and Tuscans (some 4.0, 1 4.0s and rode in a 3.6). I honestly couldn't differentiate between them, as such made my buying decision on condition and history rather than model. In the end bought a Mk2 Tuscan 3.6 and I've never felt shortchanged in performance terms. It was 2-3k cheaper than equivelent 4.0 cars and should I sell, it will probably fetch a similar amount less.

May not work for everyone but glad I bought on those principles. HTH.

I would consider a 3.6, they seem to be a fantastic engine, Power wise there is not much between them just the 4.0 has a little more torque but the 3.6 seems to sound a little better as it revs more.

I would say that it is worth trying to drive both in the same model of car.

The 3.6 is a very sweat engine with a lovely note and bags of English character.

It does rev more freely and while it has less power, for the pleasure of driving A and B roads it is sublime.

I've learnt recently that by lightening the chains and flywheel on a 4 you can have the beat of both worlds.

I had a 3.6 t350 and loved the revviness of the motor, then moved to the sag with the 4lt engine and to be honest I think I enjoyed the 3.6 more, it was so sweet, whereas the 4lt needs a heavier foot at times IMHO.

Try to drive both and judge for yourself.

Interesting i didnt know that lighter chains were available? You have noticed a perceptible difference then?

To the OP, everyone talks of more torque on the 4...but i would follow the advice on here -try them and see if you can tell the difference. I would think on a track it would show (with similar drivers), but on the road, a spirited drive is much more in the hands of the driver and how much skill he has!!

Yup. It's an interesting one as I've finished running in a new 4.0 and having driven 4.0s before I always preferred my 3.6 just as it revved wonderfully and there was a real difference from a 4.0.

When driving the new engine I noticed that I was blipping too early on down shifts and was needing to alter my driving style. I would hazard that it revs more freely than my 3.6 did. Now it does have the FFF2 head but I believe much of the reason lies in significantly lighter chains as well as the flywheel.

I can't for the life of me remember what the spec of te chains were though. Sorry.

I actually bought a 4.0 ltr, well that's what the V5 stated.

When we had a dig around under the bonnets it turned out to be a 3.6, this was confirmed later by TVR.

Was I disappointed? no it was a great engine and never a beat.

I don't think it would really bother me to be honest, both engines are blistering in there own ways.

If the size does bother you, use the few thousand you save on buying, save up a bit and get a 4.3/5 rebuild from power?

Just a suggestion!
