What is it that lets go on the rear window when the targa is out? I have been up to (well quite a lot of leptons) with the window in and the roof off and obviously quite conscious of the stories about windows flying off into the ether. Is it the catch breaking or the bayonet coming out of the quarter turn fixing that snaps free or is it the window flexing out of the top slot that does it? I assume that it isn't the latter as the Raceproved items wouldn't make any difference would they?
Who has had this happen to them?

I think its just the clips which are rubbish. Iirc as well the earlier windows were slightly too small which didn't help either.

The racetech or raceproved are meant to stop this. And function aside they look better too smile

I have the brushed Ali ones that are allen keyed in, they seem to be very secure even over bumpy roads at high leptons

The plastic clips bend I think. With the Raceproved clips my original smaller size screen has never come out

Yes, as others have said, the early cars/screen had a smaller 'tongue' protruding into the header bar - and the original plastic clips had a tendency to bend/flex.

The combination of both caused the rear screen to move sufficiently that they would push out at speed with the roof off - or - sometimes, with just the side windows open.

The clips bend even on the later cars these were from my 2006 Tuscan S:-

Replaced with the Raceproved clips some years ago and now a lot more secure.

I've only ever driven with my window in once whilst having the roof off (I drive without it whenever possible because it's so quick to take out) and found that there was a horrible buffering noise at most speeds.

Has anyone else found this?

Also, how much less do you find that the wind whips around the car with the roof off and screen in? The one time I kept the screen in was because I convinced my girlfriend that there would be no breeze (she didn't want to mess her hair up biggrin), however from memory it wasn't much difference. Perhaps I'm wrong though...

I only get the buffeting noise over about 90mph, but it gets really un-pleasant at 110mph. Drove from Bristol on thursday up the M5 for an hour with the roof off and screen in. It was fine, perfectly comfortable.

I guess I must rarely drive below 90 then wink

Thanks for that. Do you find it much less blowy at motorway speeds?

I may not be the right judge. My previous convertible was the G33 and that is much more exposed. The Tuscan is still and quiet by comparison smile

If you lift the windows up a bit it cuts the buffeting noise, I understand even up around 100mph. smile

I know with my late 03 Mark 1 S, the lip on the top of the rear screen goes well under the roof bar, and the boot lid clamps down over the bottom of the screen, in addition to the two clips being in position - so I can't see any way of me losing my screen. I guess as the design progressed, changes were made later on....but some of you will rely more on the clips I guess ??

The screen fits the same in my early mk1 with lower edge inside the bootlid. When I lost my screen (also a large screen) one of the clips was loose due to the twist bar bit of the clip not securing properly.. Since fitted the alloy clips and although they are a bit more of a faff well worth the money.

If anyone needs a screen hhc apparently have stock of new and 2nd hand ones btw.

On my rear screen I have self adhesive cork pads on top of the clips so that the boot lid makes a positive contact and keeps them in position - could have used black rubber ones, but they don't show with the boot closed. I also have 3 small clear "door stops" (the kind you put behind a cupboard door/drawer to stop it clanging) under the boot lid that press on the rear screen with the lid shut, again to stop the screen moving and also stop squeaks

I had a small screen...blew out and lost.
I got a large screen...blew out and found.
I refitted large screen with original clips, but drilled them and fitted small stainless screws to stop screen slipping down (which is the cause of screen loss) and havn't had a problem since. smile

So the larger rear screens are easier to find biggrin

LMAO...yeah, something like that. The extra 1/2" lip on the top made it stick out like a sore thumb in the field it landed in...BONUS! Instead of spending on alloy clips (thet wern't invented when i modded mine), it's an easy and free fix that anyone can do!
