When you use the windscreen washers, I can hear the pump and the fluid leaks out from the nearside front under the washer bottle. Filling up the bottle, it drips out fairly quickly from underneath.

I think the tubing has probably become detached at the washer bottle end. I haven't used the washers since the last service, so it may have happened then as they worked before hand.

If that's the case and it is detached, is it something I can sort out myself and if so what is the best way to get at it?

I have read about tubing having melted in some cars, if that's happened, is it a standard bore of washer tubing and is it easy to replace ?

The melted/deformed tubing referred to is usually on the N/S where the tubing runs under the windscreen/scuttle trim panel. It's caused by heat from the cats - usually whilst stopped in traffic - wafting up to the tubing.

The washer bottle on the Mk.1 is behind the pepper-pot grill.IRC. So, you'd need to remove the service bonnet and the undo all the fixings for the grill to expose the wash fluid bottle. It could be the tubing has come off/is loose on the discharge side of the pump, or the bottle has a crack.

This is the problem, pushed together the washers work, the pressure pushes them apart straight away. Can I glue the two connectors together or any other ideas?

Not sure what that part is....but it could be a non-return valve. A look inside will tell, if there is a flap of some description then that's what it is.

So, I reckon you could stick it together - or get a straight tubing connector from your local motor factors.

I couldn't pull these connectors off to have a closer look, that photo was the only way I could see one half of the connector with my camera pushed into the depths of the wing.

Now glued with epoxy-resin, reinforced with insulation tape and touch wood seem to be working. If it comes apart I think I'll cut the connectors off and put a new section of tubing in.

It was the first time I have had the main bonnet off, glad to say much easier than I expected. Nice to see the engine bay.
