Type 072 Battery
Discussion
I need to replace my Type 072 car battery and have it delivered or arrange to pick it up locally, but it appears from other discussion on the forums that it is critical that the size of the new battery especially the height of 205mm including the terminals is important to fit into the existing gap.
Does anyone recommend a particular make/model and where to purchase this from?

Most of what I read recently was that they should be the 278mm ones, however on checking my car (mk2).... there was no way that was going to fit. I'd take your wheel arch cover off and measure the battery tray.
So I bought this one recently. 260mm seems an absolutely perfect fit and decent Ah and Cold Cranking!

Make sure you have enough cable length though as the +ve and -ve are the other way round. I prefer this as it moves the +ve terminal further away from the chassis.

Just bought one of these for my mk1: http://www.tayna.co.uk/Optima-Red-Top-RT-U-4.2-P42...
And a Ctek MSX10 battery conditioner.
The battery has terminals on the front too.
Starting is brilliant (815 CCA) and I honestly believe that if the starter siezed while cranking, it would flip the car on its roof!
Fits snuggly in the battery cubby hole and I think you can get reversed terminals too.
