slave cylinder failing
Discussion
The unit is failing since the clutch is biting right on the floor though no fluid appears to be leaking out. Does this mean it is now sloshing about (poetic license) and should be released?
I presume it is a gearbox out job to replace, the clutch is not that old so hope to get away with keeping the existing one, though replace the whole slave unit since I heard the rubber seals are false economy. Looking back there were a few upgraded ones, any suggestions as to which ones are the ones to go for now.
I also have the space to work on it so fancied having a go myself. Anyone done this and taken a few pics or done any write ups?
thanks

I have just dropped my gearbox, same problem slave cylinder leaking. No indication of leaking fluid until i removed gearbox but with gearbox removed and clutch depressed i could see a small ammount of fluid leaking past one of the seals. What is worrying is that it had new clutch and slave cylinder with the previous owner in 2009 and it has only done 3000 miles since. There is an uprated cylinder available which i understand is more reliable. It is relatively easy to remove the gearbox if you are mechanically minded, i have worked on a lot worse. It took about 4 hrs, worst part is having the right tools, had to cannabilise a number of allen keys to reach the cap head screws holding the gearbox and bell housing.
Mines on its way out too and have looked into alternatives.
Raceproved do their own slave cylinder and they were sold by Racetech direct but when I saked about them today they said they no longer stock them and have reverted back to the originals, wouldnt say a reason.
Must admit, I wanted the raceproved one as its lighter, but am a tad concerned that Racetech no longer stock them. Anyone heard any bad press about the upgraded ones?

Mines In at str8 6 and the slave had started leaking. He is putting in what he called an updated one do maybe worth a call to him.
Luckily my clutch has a lot of life left so that's a bonus, on the other hand the flywheel is f
ked so he's putting a lightweight one in so I should see an upgrade for the money at least.

I suspect it's because you can buy them directly from Raceproved. Raceproved do their own slave cylinder and they were sold by Racetech direct but when I saked about them today they said they no longer stock them and have reverted back to the originals, wouldnt say a reason.

I think when they first came out (5+ years ago now) Raceproved didn't have a distribution network so Racetech were the official distributors. I've had the cylinder and clutch in my car for the past 5 years and 30k miles (London city and touring) and barring an early teething problem, it still feels as good as the day it was fitted.
Hi Stuart, you certainly didn't have any problems changing gear yesterday, so what did you decide to do in the end. As it happened I had to replace the slave seals in order to go to Zolder, car wasn't back on the ground until Tuesday night - horrible job.
Thanks again for the ride and congrats on your first place.

I have fitted the uprated slave cylinder and everythings back together, what a difference gearchanges are nice and smooth. Should now last a few years. when i removed the old slave cylinder the seals were leaking and it was only three years since the whole unit was replaced. Decided it was a false economy just replacing the seals and knowing that probably they were going to fail again.
