David

The lead should go on an older type laptop or get a USB serial converter.

Driving me mad this and been all over the internet.
My computer installs the USB converter to port 3 and the diagnostics software wants to open port 1 or 2 no option of three.

I have gone through all the posts any one else had the same issue?

Thanks

You can change the port settings in device manager.

I had the same issues last week, I also bought the lead from amazon mentioned above. I tried for ages to get it to work with windows Vista, in theend I went with an old lap top that had the serial port and it works fine now.

The maplins converter works fine as it has the correct Chip set( PL2303 ) some of the cheaper ones from e-bay use a inferior chip set and they are not compatible with the MBE ecu.

To work on newer operating systems in needs to be 32bit systems or lower as wont run on 64 bit for some reason???? But i run on both Vista on my garage desk top and windows 7 32 bit.

It has got me beat so far...
My wife has just told me I have sat in the car with the laptop every night for 6 days ! she is right.
I have tried every thread I could google and whatever I do I get 'cant open serial port'

There must be another way.
I am not hugely computer savy, I have made every change and combination of changes posted to date.

Is there a Sussex/Surrey owner who has done it ? I could copy there settings ??

Any help appreciated

Feel for you. I wonder if your USB converter is good enough quality? The one I linked in my post above mine definitely works.

After running the disk, it made no reference to which port it was installed to so I'm not sure what you mean by that. Mine didn't work initially because I hadn't realised I need to change it to port 1. As soon as I did, it all came to life. I did this by right clicking on 'my comouter', selecting properties then device manager, then serial ports. Somewhere in there you find a drop down menu where you can change the port number. As soon as I selected port 1 I was away.

Hope this helps.

Actually re-reading your post makes me think you haven't changed the port number. It's not the software you are trying to change the port number of, it's the actual USB serial converter. You can make it connect to any port number you like. Sounds like default for yours is 3 (I think maybe mine was too). You just need to change it to 1.

Hi Clifford, I know how you feel, I had the same experience, I felt like jumping up and down on my laptop and then reversing over it a few times. I could not get it to work with the Serial to USB adaptor using windows Vista on my Dell laptop. Fortunatley I knew a local TVR owner who had the software, he came over and using his OLD TAPTOP and my new (£60)cable he got it running in ten minutes. I have the newer ECU with the 3 prongs at the ecu end and the female serial adaptor at the other end.
I can't solve your issue but it might be worth going to a regional meet with your laptop and lead and see if one of the guys who is using the software can have a look at it for you.
Good luck as it is a good bit of software.

Here's a picture of it running

Just to rub it in hehe

Definitely change the port number and try again. I find have to do this each time I plug the lead in.

There is sometimes another 3 pin connector too
Make sure you have the correct one!

A good USB serial converter is essential

It took me 7nights to sort mine

It's the Maplin one so I believe ok.
Can only see one three pin connector, however even when not connected software still says can't open port.
