zero oil pressure reading

I have replaced my sender unit with the uprated one because the old one was leaking and it was giving me an intermittent low pressure reading, it would suddenly drop from about 45psi at idle when cold to zero for a split second and back up to 45psi. i also noticed that the display pressure reading varies enormously , is this normal. Replacing the sender unit cured the leak but not the intermittent pressure reading to zero or large variation in pressure.

The oil warning light does not come on when the pressure drops.
