A year ago I was having trouble selecting gear. Not long after, the fingers snapped on the clutch.

£1,500 later (!!!) I had a new clutch. I comforted myself with the over priced bill with the fact that I would have a nice new clutch that would last me some time.

However, over the past couple of weeks I am once again having a little trouble selecting gear! Surely these clutches should last longer than a year, shouldn't they? There doesn't appear to be any fluid leak as the reservoir is staying full so I'm starting to think it's the fingers again.

Do clutches come with some kind of warranty? Saying that, I've just checked the invoice and it was dated 21st October!

I'd guess at 1500 quid it was a full clutch pack, release and flywheel replacement? They should last min c.25k miles as long as the travel is set up properly.

Sadly not. The cost had to do with being charged an obscene amount for the clutch kit, along with extra labour with removing the gear box a couple of times after deciding the spigot bearing needed replacing after the first test drive. After advice on here, I had actually asked them to change the spigot along with the clutch, but apparently there was no record of me asking this.

To make it worse, the car developed an EFI fault on the way home. Took the car back and they said there was a bad connection with the air temp sensor, which they repaired - for £70! When I asked if this was related to the work with the clutch, I was told no.

After feeling pretty aggrieved, I decided never to take the car back to them again. Felt justified after another TVR owner on here complained of being ripped off by them too.

Please PM me who did the work so i can avoid! Mine hasnt got long i dont think.

As has been said, 25k miles seems to be an average, some much longer tho.

Best of luck getting it sorted frown

So the slave wasn't replaced?

Thanks Rob. PM sent.

No, I don't think the slave was changed. I'll dig out the invoice when I get home. Had I been slightly more clued up about the car a year ago I would have definitely fitted an uprated one.

The slave was something I was a little worried about, but assumed if it was on its way out I would be losing fluid. Or is this not correct?

Thanks Mate,

If worst comes to the worst it could be worth approaching TVR Power and asking about this and if Dom would consider repeating wink

The slave can fail without leaking fluid outside. If the rubber seals fail the fluid may fail to apply pressure to the clutch but can remain inside the system. So no leaking but no clutch as well. Happened to me just a few days ago

Wow, great price.

Still thinking whether I go back to the original garage should it fail again. My feelings are, probably not.

Ah, thanks for that. Gives me hope that the job a year ago wasn't a total waste of time and money.

Also bear in mind that Tuscans are a bit like old ladies with arthritis. As soon as it gets a bit cool and damp the gear change always becomes more graunchy than in the summer.

Good point! With any luck I'm being paranoid and all is fine. Really does feel like the clutch should disengage just a little bit more than it currently is though...

I need to take back a little of what I said above. I dug out the invoice last night and found that the slave had been replaced. Better, but still expensive though!

Typically known as 'sods law', i have just found out my clutch has gone a b*llock! I didnt quite envisage i would be tackling this quite so soon after answering the thread earlier this week...

Gone for a genuine brand AP Racing replacement and new master cylinder (already a raceproved slave fitted)...but its a bill i didnt exactly want lol....

Hard luck Rob. Do you have the AA parts and labour warranty? I'm in the process of signing up. Means at least the first £500 of my bill will be covered should my clutch go again.

So how many miles did the old clutch last
It lasted 13k miles...

It was a reconditioned raceproved version as i understand, not genuine AP. It had been in 5 years though, so probably a good number of cycles, it was a lift off spring that had failed.

I DO..BUT!!!! It happened when removing clutch from the engine for something totally unrelated, car is at Str8 Six, so just bad luck....no AA warranty cover possible frown
