Buying from Murrays in Edinburgh
Discussion
Post for all who might consider buying a used car from murrays Edinburgh. I just purchased a tuscan from them, after being told that their mechanics have done all relevant checks and that the vehicle went through a MoT. The car was picked up by me and driven down to the boys from Str8six. Bad news! Collapsed engine mount, perished fuel lines and coolant hoses.
Not one to make an issue but please have an independent engineer check any vehicles from this garage.
Jason and chas are great guys and pulled some magic tricks to sort it out and get my car ready for a long trip down to Spain.

I bet you, if you take the Tuscan somewhere else they will find something differentNot one to make an issue but please have an independent engineer check any vehicles from this garage.

Not sure any of those problems though would prevent an mot, so the mot was likely genuine. Not one to make an issue but please have an independent engineer check any vehicles from this garage.

Str8six have just replaced all of those parts on mine too this week along with a 12k service, it seems these parts are common failures on these cars and like its been said, they wouldn't make it fail an MOT. I have a list of things on my car that need attention that fill up an A5 sheet of paper, some of them were found by str8six, but lots weren't, if I took the car somewhere else I'm sure they'd have found different things.
Can't believe a perished fuel pipe doesn;t fail an MOT - exactly why is that not a safety risk ??? !!! But, I understand an MOT does not require the inspector to raise the bonnet ?? Amazing !
Do get your fuel hoses checked guys - mine was in a very bad state - it's cheap rubber by the looks of things - luckily Dom spotted it before putting my car on the dyno.

Have to agree with Walford, those problems arent unusual. What is unfortunate is that only the guys like str8 six, who see these cars everyday, know exactly where to look.
Engine mounts on mine lasted less than 5k miles after last change before they were split again. Later Racetech mounts are meant to be better but only time will tell.
The fuel lines have a reputation for perishing, particularly the line under the car, from tank to pump. I that line (and some others) replaced with marine spec hose when i first got the car.
Water hoses are just one of those things...most cars this age will have some deterioration. Its a shame the garage didnt spot - but then again they are selling a used car - why would they replace with new? Perhaps a warning would have been nice though.
It does go to show why its worth buying from guys like str8 six though...that know these cars inside out and perhaps wouldnt let a car go out without these items addressed
I can believe it would sail through an MOT though, if your average tester doesnt 'know' these cars, things like the fuel line are hard to spot.

Isn't this the Ferrari/Maserati/Porsche place? I'd imagine (although not excused) that it's TVR quirkiness, and probably the fact that it's all buried under a fixed bonnet which discourages regular viewage.
This will be the red Tuscan that they had for a while? Looked pretty good from the pics.

No that's Graypaul on the otherside of the city, MMC retail Lotus's/Aston Martin's/Rolls Royces. This will be the red Tuscan that they had for a while? Looked pretty good from the pics.
That Tuscan did look nice - it was for sale via TVR Ecosse for a while earlier this year with a somewhat different asking price. To be fair MMC reviewed their price a couple of times over a number of weeks.
I am very sorry to hear u had a bad experience buying your tuscan from murrays but I have bought and sold a total of 3 cars with them and had a great experience. I would say that they never knew what to look for on the car where as a specialist Tvr garage does this work everyday. No excuse maybe but the Tvr is very much specialist.
I hope now it's sorted u enjoy the car I used to love mine

Thanks for all your comments. The summary on this is that str8six gave me a full list, forwarded to murrays for comment and a request on a contribution towards the little things that there prechecks should have picked up. Never got an answer back from them.
However on the plus side very happy with the car after Jason spent hours on getting her running right and great trip down to Spain.
Thanks for all the comments. Learnt a few things too...
