petrol smell from in the boot

Can anyone offer any help on what could be the cause of a strong petrol smell coming from inside the boot on my Tuscan MK2s. I have checked the neck joints around the underside of the filler cap and the pipe to the tank no leaks. The carpet is dry all round the only thing I can think off is the filler cap its self. It is the standard factory fitted one. There are no petrol marks on the garage floor and the smell seams strongest when the car has been stationary for best part of a day

check the fuel tank on the top right hand side under the flap as sometimes they leak from the sender unit

Hi thanks for the the tip i forgot about the sender unfortunatly there are no signes of leakage the glue on the carpets is still tight if the petrol was leaking from there it melts the glue. I have not used the car today. and when I opened the boot to check the sender unit there was a very strong smell of petrol again.

I had this the other week.

I couldnt see anything obvious, but it did get worse.

In the end, I took it to Sebring and they found the leak - the tank had split near the breather pipe on the right hand side (looking in to the boot)

They removed the tank and welded it up fixing the leak - apparently it has happened to others before me...

luckily they could fix it - the alternative plan was to get a second hand one from a breakers (£250 at best)

I'd get it checked out soon
