Newbie On the Verge of Purchase

Hopefully putting deposit on stunning 02 Plated Mk1 Tusc tomorrow, just wavering slightly on total cost of ownership and insurance. Anyone recommend an Insurance plan, only going to use weekends prob 5-6k miles a year. I have a general quote of £580 per year, is than reasonable? Also, why does it always seem doom and gloom on the Forums?

Insurance quote seems ok to me.
People generally only post on here when they have a problem / query and therefore it is not normally positive.
My advive is go for it.
I've had mine 10 month with only 1 minor problem with the slave cylinder on the clutch which was repaired as part of the warranty by the dealer.

As AliD said, you mainly see the problems on here which is a downer but on the other hand a great source of information.
I think that the amount of dirty laundry aired in here contributes to the reliability reputation.
I have been driving TVR's for about 10 years now starting with my Wedge, then Chimaera and now my Tuscan. In that time I have been working in Switzerland and Germany, driven home to the UK countless times rain or shine, winter or summer and have had very few problems.
I had more trouble with Rover, Mazda and Vauxhaul than any TVR.
You still get plenty of positive forums and general declarations of love for our cars.

580 seems reasonable, but like any quote play them off each other, most peeps on here use A Plan, privelege, etc just do a search in the tuscan forum, theres loads of good quote comparisons..i used tesco's personally and it was about 500.
Dont get bogged down with negative comments on here, personally i post any issues i have for advice, i dont post the good times cos i dont need advice on them
The good far outways any bad (for the most part), just be responsible and allow 3k per year for running costs, my outlay for year 1 was about 2k, and so far in year 2 (6 months) it has been £0 - I have had a lot done also including new clutch/master cylinder, service and various niggles. Just be diligent in the one you are buying, check it and check it again, if you get a warranty thrown in don't assume all will be covered because 9/10 it won't, but of course it dont hurt to have, my point is dont rely on it as a safety net.
and....just go for it, its a fantastic experience and an itch that will need itching at some point no matter how many doubts you throw around, so you might aswell get it while the pricing is as good as it gets.

Agree with all that. Bought a 51 plate Tuscan in January, and a 51 plate Vectra SRi at the same time (for driving to work!). In 9 months i've had 3 problems with each car -
Problem with Tuscan - 1. Battery's went flat, no longer holding charge and getting replaced today. 2. People point at me, and always peer in the windows when it's parked so get to keep it clean and tidy. 3. Caused an accident recently when someone turned to watch me drive past, and walked into a lampost.
Problem with Vectra - 1. Engine management problems. 3. ABS problems. 3. Leaking fuel tank (split in the seam).

Recommend A Flux, A Plan, A Manning and Comp Car Insurance myself - all very aware of the Tuscan, all helpful and generally competitively priced. Good to see another potential owner - best of luck. Loads of good ownership advice on here, but definitely recommend you do a Ride Drive course early on in your Tuscan ownership.
Bought my Tuscan privatly and is the best thing i ever done. Had mine nearly a month, only problem had a Warning EFI FUALT come up took it to leven, had it checked out and it was fine.

One thing to watch out for, the car gets alot of attention, more than you would believe everyone looks, points, ask you about it, and even had a couple of girls smiling at me

Guys got £539 from A Plan max 5000 miles so will be taking that up. Not sure when picking the car up as seller waiting for transefr of private reg but can't wait. May need a little valet as not to my very exacting standards in interior, still its very good but needs some attention. Anyone used TrackVRoad valet/detailing service?

1 set of dampers (Harvey Bailey inadequate)
1 set of dampers re gassed Wear and tear)
4 sets of tyres (Wear and tear)
1 reconditioned diff (my choice)
8 sets of brake pads (wear and tear)
2 Sets of front discs (Hair line cracks and wear and tear))
1 set of rear discs (Wear and tear)
£7000 spent on over servicing (Compulsory)
£650 ish a year to insure
New wheels (Spiders are not good enough)
Modified exhaust (My choice)
New seats (Standard one's to sloppy)
New plenum (My choice)
2 new alternators (Get cooked)
2 divorces
Be warned if you get sucked in to TVR it could cost you a mint. On the other hand it could cost you less to run than an m3 but overall the enjoyment is priceless.
If you get a good one £1500 per year
If you get a bad one £5000 per year
Based on a 3 year relationship.
But whatever you do don't cut corners.
