hestitaion and stuttering problem?
Discussion
The car has suddenly developed a stuttering when i press the accelerator, like its only firing on 5 cylinders or something. Though it may have been bad fuel but have topped up from two different places and done 100 mile and still no cure.
Im gonna get the bonnet off in a min, but what to look for? Its just had major 12k service so new leads and that are on, doubt its water in plugs either. So am I looking at
Coil packs
Lamba sensor
Carbon Canister
Oh there has been a smell of petrol too sometimes since the service. So im gonna check the carbon canister anyway, but would that cause the stuttering? It is also backfiring down the exhaust but not the usual clean sounding backfire if you know what i mean. And the revs jump around on the display from 800 rpm to 2k but the engine revs are steady, its just the display doing it. Last sympton is the shift lights have blipped on twice now for a brief second. I think they are all linked just not by what!
Want to get it done tonight as its thunder in the tunnels tomorrow and car is not going as it is.

Check the obvious things like loose connections between coil and leads, and that the leads are on the plugs securely. Check the lambda probe connections are ok and not touching the exhaust or something.
From the other symptoms you describe, I would check the connection onto the crank sensor (under & to the rear of the coil pack). This could have been knocked loose or one of the HT leads could be routed too close to the sensor lead. Check the low tension (four pin) plug onto the coil too.
I don't envy you out in this cold wind tonight mate!
Hope you get it sorted and you make it tomorrow.

When mine had spikes in the revs with the change up lights coming on sometimes it was down to the wrong replacement alternator sending spikes and messing around with the display pod electrics. Hesitation under acceleration could be down to the coil pack, definitely worth checking out.
ETA: if your leads have recently been replaced check they've been connected in the correct order on the coil pack.

Thanks for the advice guys. I have had a good look at the HT leads coil pack end and WD40'd them, all feel secure, checked the 4 pin plug. Didnt read this about CAS plug till after i have just put bonnet back on! I havent taken cam cover off yet and checked plug ends, was thinking with it just having had a service i doubt there is water in the newly sealed cam cover?? Or am i assuming too mcuh and a lead amy have come off? Still seemed to stutter on reves with rich smell of fuel in exhausts. Maybe i do need to do the cam cover and check those ends.
Damm I have TVR's sometimes!

Could it be the Lambda's? - is the stuttering there all the while, up past 4Krpms? I could be wrong but I think the Lambda's are taken out of the loop after 4K. Could be worth checking the cam cover for water if it has got wet recently - bad spark could be causing the fuel smell (?) Hope it turns out ok,

if it's just had a 12K service I would be phoning them at 8.30am tomorrow and asking them to recover it and sort it.
I was wondering that, i have put about 700 miles since the service, so am I right to expect a prob with the service? It was running well after it. Maybe the coil pack has just given up? goon1001 said:
