Potentially Buying a Tuscan - How I understand it
Discussion
Hi all,
Considering a few cars for my next one. I really fancy a Tuscan for it and also considering a Monaro VXR.
As far as I understand a Tuscan engine (please correct me as needed) are as follows:
- Rebuild regardless of year of the engine is around 20-30k at £5k a time? Or does this alter with the later engines?
- Build quality is ok, just minor electrical?
My biggest concern is the engine.... I don't mind the odd seal/leak etc. But as I do 10-12k a year will I be rebuilding frequently?
I can rebuild and remove engines no problem, although I would probably get the bottom end built by someone else due to the boring and balancing.. Has anyone rebuilt their own TVR engine with rough costs?
Had a look at the checklist which is brilliant thanks whoever did that

Well said, thats about spot on, just have a good look at the chassis as well in particular on early cars, or ones that live outside.Considering a few cars for my next one. I really fancy a Tuscan for it and also considering a Monaro VXR.

As for a Tuscan or a Monaro....er ones an angry wasp that you need to always be wary of and keep an eye on, the others a comfy cruiser with loads of grunt that will do what it says on the tin.

This thread answers a question I was about to raise after seeing this in an ad for a Tuscan....."Please note that my tuscan hasn't had an engine rebuild because it doesn't need one - It drives as it should!"
Living on borrowed time?
There are a few other variables, such as....Living on borrowed time?
1. Warming up the engine properly, nothing above 2500 revs until the oil reaches 60 degrees.
2. Dont do the warming up 'on the drive' coz the oil pressure is not high enough. Potter around until engine up to temp.
3. The age of the engine, it does seem that engines built (or rebuilt) after Jan 2003 last longer.
4. If its had a rebuild, who did the work? Some engineers are clearly better than others.
5. Luck.
6. Lots of luck.
HTH.
