Accelerator stuck open!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just finished changing my pants.....

Driving home, gradually add some beans on a nice open bit of road, see a car in the distance so lift off again, and the car keeps going, and going, right up to the rev limiter.

To avoid reaching silly speeds I jumped on the clutch and stamped on the gas a few times to try and "free it up", it sat at 4500 rpm for a bit and eventually stopped after a bit more persuasion.

I stopped and checked its wasnt somthing stuck in the pedal box or the floor mat jamming it down but didnt appear to be.

Any ideas what might cause this? sticky throttle cable maybe? pedal needs lubricating?

Im not sure if the pedal actually stuck down, it all happened so quick I didnt get much of a chance to analyse it!!

did check that, wasnt the case (although it might have shifted back with my frantic pedal pushing)

The mat is velcroed in place so I dont think it shifted and there is a fair amount of metal between the pedals the the carpet.

dont think I can do that on a tuscan 1, if I can please enlighten me!

Mine did it once at lower revs,i coasted and turned off the engine at the same time and checked the same.found nothing,restarted and not done it since.I've heard that ECUs can play this trick.

Mine used to stick quite regularly when I got her. It was due to corrosion on the bushings of the the pivot of the pedal. Used to have to WD40 it all the time.
Improved through regular use.

i know the accelorator cables can sometimes chorode inside and cause them to stick..would be a likely cause

could be the cable breaking up and binding/sticking, the throttle return spring on the throttle bodies binding and possible throttle butterflies sticking(but unlikely, only happened to me after factory rebuilt the inlet)

Anyway, get it checked asap, as if it breaks it will be a pain.

got other issues too (see HELP brakes stuck on! thread) fingers crossed its off to power on monday for some TLC!

Had same problem. Changed cable and never reoccurred. Improved "accuracy" of throttle enormously too - amazing how u can adapt to a gradual decline in something like that..

Had a chat about this with Pete at Roath Garage. It's a classic as "gunk" builds up at the pivot point of the pedals being "floor" mounted. He has told me to regularly clean out and lubricate the bearings. It's an easy task if a little fiddly, and whilst there check your brake fluid levels - it sounds as though you might need to be sure they're full!!

The last screen on your pod that you see when changing time or adjusting shift lights etc shows what the maximums are taht car has reached since last reset (speed , temp, rpm etc)

oooh cool, didnt know that, car has gone to TVR power now (well it SHOULD be there, the AA arent sure what they have done with it at the moment) I'll have a play with that when I get it back!

You cannot see those figures on my June 2000 pod, it's on later cars.

I've had this too once, on a track day. The pedal stop wasn't adjusted correctly, and so when I pushed the accelerator down fully, it went further than it should have and part of the mechanism/cable caught on something behind the pedal cover.

Mine was an 2002 but still series 1 so not sure when this changed.
