how to spot engine woes?

dear all,
are there any signs to look for for imminent engine woes - and roughly speaking when does the reliability of the speed six engine kick in.

I have trawled through the various posts and either I'm being thick or I can't find a solid answer on the aboves.

Hey Chewitt!

I think you answered your own question - there is no solid answer! It really does depend on too many factors. Age of car, how well it's been serviced and looked after, has it been warmed up correctly, is it used daily... there's so many things that to give you the answer you're after it would be almost impossible.

Some engines blow up after 5,000 miles, some are still going strong after 40,000+ miles. You'll always hear the negatives and when something does go wrong it's posted here but when everything is alright, people keep quiet.

Best advice is to just get a feel for how the car is running when it's running well and take it from there. Is it using unusual amounts of oil or water? Are there strange noises coming from the engine bay? Are the revs behaving as they're supposed to?

Sorry I couldn't be of any more help. Have you checked the Speed Six Engine forum? There's loads of info in there. Unfortunately the engine rebuild issue has been done to death on PH, so people will probably just tell you to search through previous posts!

In addition to the above, it's also fair to say that the newer engines seem to be a lot better behaved than the first few. That's not to say they will never need a re-build, but there are quite a few out there that have done reasonably milages without problems.
