Petrol Smell

Hi All,

Now I know there is a constant smell of petrol in the car etc however over the last week or so the smell has started to get stronger, when i opened up the boot after I had just switched the car off the petrol cap was hissing!

could the problem be that the seal has gone on my cap or something making the vapours more apparent in the cabin?

Girlfriend although not a great fan of the car/smell anyway is disliking it evenmore and i refuse to put one of those silly smelly's things in there.

It's likely to be the petrol overflow pipe that runs to the carbon cannistor in the front o/s wing. The pipe may be blocked/kinked or the carbon cannister blocked. You should not have a smell of petrol except for maybe after starting the engine for a few seconds maybe when hot etc.

defo sounds like the seal is gone on your filler cap. A good place to start would be sourcing a new one!

A lots of Tuscans do smell a bit on startup, it should rapidly go though once driving.

Do keep an eye out for drips on the floor, would not be good if you are actually leaking fuel from somewhere, probably worth have a nosey under the bonnet too.

I've just discovered my Audi is currently leaking fuel andI'd been driving it around like that for about 500 miles, oops.

actually someone recently mentioned on here the fuel hose under the airbox is liable to perish, so while probably not your fault, also worth getting it checked.

Can you tell me how do i get to the pipe etc and how easy is it to fix myself bearing in mind that im not that mechanical minded but also not a wolly!!!!

It could also be a problem with the fuel tank itself.

I had a whiff of petrol for a while and couldnt place it until I noticed that the boot seemed to be the source.

Took it to Sebring to discover that the tank was damaged - The weld at the breather pipe on the RHS of the boot had perished.

Apparently it is reasonably common - I was not the first to have had this problem - SOmething to do with the way the tank was mounted.

Tank was removed and repaired and has been whiff free since.

Hmmmm. This has got me thinking. I looked at a few Tuscans before I bought mine and remember most of them having a bit of a whiff of petrol. I put this down to the filler cap being in the boot.

Mine has a bit of a whiff in the boot but not in the cockpit. Should I be concerned by this? Should I get it checked out? It's been on my mind lately because whatever I carry in the boot, carrier bags of shopping as an example, it picks up the smell. With this in mind I'll probably smell like a mechanic for the whole of the Le mans weekend unless I have my clothes bag behind my seat!
