Headlamps in France

I have a 2001 mk 1 and I am off to Le Mans (for the 3rd time) I have never put anything on my headlamps in the past, mainly because I haven't intended to do any night driving, but I have heard that my headlamps are not the sort that requires any kind of deflection.

Is this true ?

Its not the law to do anything with your headlights. Your just led to believe it is by the firms who manufacture the bits you put on your headlights for European travel.
