Engine went clunk in a big way this afternoon. It now has a rather alarming noise coming from it but as we coasted into the service station.
I think I am going to go for the LS7 transplant for it. Not that I am ever going to sell, but would it be worth more or less than with a 4.3 5 yr guarentee engine do you think?
There seems to be about £ 1000 differance in the costs to get it done.

Was that a drive in drive out quote with a wauntee? From what I was told to do an LS conversion your looking at near £10k.
Personally I would let a specialist diag the fault, then grab a cool beer and go through your options with them. Could turn out to be something that dosnt require a whole engine rebuild.

You could opt for a Bmw m tech lump, reliability and piece of mind.
Except that it won't fit and is nowhere near as powerful....oh and good luck getting all those electronics successfully and reliably plumbed in
.Apart from the above small considerations, a great option!

I dont think its readily available its just the type of thing i would do, given all the talk of TVR fiting yank motors in the futue .
i cant see fitting a BMW lump being to hardto fit. Although goes against the grain, British car / Gerry engine
similar performance? but more reliablle ?
You could always try Top gears milk float electric motor, about as reliable as TVR but cheaper..
No being sensible,
Get the car looked over and a definate firm diagnosis of the problem before assuming the worst,as keep your options open and shop around for value as these things can soon run away with your time and money,
good luck best wishes

Thanks for the replies, for a moment there I thought it was going to turn into one of THOSE threads
The real question was would you pay more or less with the V8 lump in it if you were buying one?
It depends on A) the power out put and B) the quality of the install. If both were very good then I would probably pay more because of the relability of the engine and because of how much it costs to get done (although you are not going to get all that bit back).

However that said a car with a TVR Power Full engine rebuild (either 4.3 or 4.5) is going to be fetching more money as well...
It's a tough call as both don't really come up for sale that often.
I'd be tempted to go for the LS..
The Ls is reliable easier to stay in tune when set up correctly and servicing is easier plus the parts that require servicing are easier to get to. the price is for a BRAND NEW ENGINE.
The 4.3/4.5 keeps it TVR and the 5 yr warrenty is attractive and the speed six engine is great when on song.. I think the cost of these REBUILT engines are excessive consideribg it is just replacement parts on an excisting engine..I mean £10k is a lot for a rebuild. I am sure the quality is excellent as is the power but I just think the price is too much.
In saying that it is a tough call, I have a SP6 and it is a fantastic engine so keeping it the same but with increased power and reliability certainly appeals but so does a new LS which has proven power and reliability and parts are plentifull and don't seem to command the TVR increase!!.
At least now you have a choice and 2 good ones at that. Whatever way you go I don't think you will be dissapointed.
Good luck
george

I was looking recently at the engine options, had pretty much decided on the 4.3 but the cost difference compared to the performance increase didn't seem to warrant the extra spend, the engine is now with Jason and str8six and is going to be rebuilt to latest spec with the oil way mods and bearings etc.
Having seen him building engines in the past I'm happy its him doing the work.

Out of interest is the extra oil ways and bearings done as standard or is that just an extra mod? Having seen him building engines in the past I'm happy its him doing the work.
Looking at getting my top end done next year and have had some fantastic quotes for new heads with upgraded gubbins in them, however wasnt sure if extra oil ways were part of it (or are they in the block).
Sorry if thats a silly question.

Personally if I was buying and found an LS Tuscan that worked, was well installed etc I would buy it over a 4.2/4.5
Servicing costs would be cheaper, replacement parts would be cheaper, mpg cheaper etc etc. It really could turn the Tuscan into a daily drive
My only concern at present is that the LS is a bit unknown as to how well it works in a Tuscan.
The warranty of TVR power is pretty hard to beat though.
Would be good if Steve Heath offered a decent warranty on his conversion - even if it was just his work as opposed to the actual engine.
Go for it.....mainly so you can report back on how good it is!!

Ok car is being picked up on Wednesday so we will see if its a rebuild or not. If it is I am leaning towards the V8. I have had the car 3 years and love the power and noise of the S6 when it on song so I will need to be assured it will still have that as standard! Only had a flat battery and some trouble with the lights so far so I can't complain. I like the idea of getting more use and not going out locally in my Transit because it wont give it a long enought run etc, and getting rid of the ' Will it blow today ' feeling I am sure we all have in the back of our minds.
Anyway will keep you posted if its the LS. Thanks for you input.

To answer your question, I think that an S6 car will always be worth more than an LS car regardless of power, quality of work etc. The Triumph Stag example, often quoted, is quite a good reference. There seems to be about £ 1000 differance in the costs to get it done.
Price wise I think that you may be a fair bit out. Dom's 4.3 is about £7.5k whereas an LS7 I would think double that. Even shpub is talking about £9/10 for an LS2/3.
Try to get some test drives and go for what you want.

As the owner of yank powered V8 Tuscan.....in hindsight....I would say go with one of the established engine re-builders; Racing Green, TVR Power or Str8six. When I did mine there were very limited guarantees on a Sp6! Also, it was $2.20 to £1! Which made it pretty sensible! Now in my opinion it's uneconomical and although some people may pay more; most punters would steer well clear of a Tuscan transplant car. I'm not saying that your car will be worth less.....I just think you would limit the number of prospective buyers. I think the LS7 conversion will definitely be in the region £14+!
