TVR recommended 98 to me, but because I live at 300m above sea level said 95 is fine.
ANd according to the Net that's a fact! E.g. "I do most of my driving around home at about 6,000 feet elevation or above. But at this elevation, 85 octane gasoline performs about like a 91 octane gasoline at sea level. So, unless your vehicle has a turbo charger, you are OK burning lower octane gasoline in the Mountain West."
For the rest of us the gen advice is "There is a misconception in the street-racing world that high octane fuel will make your car go faster or run better. This is simply not true. The octane rating essentially rates the fuel’s resistance to knocking."

So Shell's advertising of V-Power is claiming something untrue?

I'll let the readers do the trawl for the Fifth Gear test of premium fuels in various road cars.
Always goes in my Tuscan and gets my vote.

It isn't just the Octane rating that's important, it's the addatives in the fuel that help it burn efficiently, keep the injectors and engine cleaner and help reduce acids that destroy the engine oil. The 'Majors' spend heaps on research and their own addative blends - yes, they actually have laboratories. The supermarkets do not have laboratories and they can't buy the addative packages from BP, Texaco or Shell.
It's Shell V Power for me every time - in the Tuscan that is. In the LandRover, the Porsche Cayman and the Mini it is Shell 95 RON fuel.
Phil.

When I had my last Alfa I did a bit of writing down of mumbers, cost and mileage and it turned out that the higher octane fuels paid for themselves and then a bit extra.
I haven't repeated it for the Tuscan but it was enough to make me never consider bog-standard unleaded, winner all round I reckon.

98 Shell if there is any opportunity of finding a BMW, Porcshe or fezza on the road (Not too often here in Aus !).
V-power normal, or equivalent octane rating if I can't find a Shell
