Tuscan vs new M5
Discussion
I had a bit of a play with a 500bhp V10 M5 the other day. Great fun and my car got a nod of respect from the Beemer driver, which is rare, so credit due for being a-typical of his kind.
The good news for Tuscan owners is that my car was more than a match for the Beemer right up to the legal limit, which of course is around 140 ph kiloleptons if you convert it from mph. I later let him pass to see what I could achieve in pursuit and I think I was actually gaining a little. My car is currently decatted and chipped by TVR power but it doesn't feel dramatically faster than standard (what could!?). Maybe it's doing more than I realised.
What do you reckon? I'm quite chuffed. They are a few quid M5's aren't they? I know TVRs are the ultimate bang for the buck but it's nice to know they are still up there with the latest metal.

To be honest, I would be dissapointed if any BM was to leave the Tuscan. In standard form they are stupidly quick, in modified form they are something else.
I know from experience that a sorted Tuscan will go by an M5 like its going backwards. Once its in the 5k+ rev range theres nothing out there any where near apart from your extreme motors. As for torque the M5 would leave it behind so its just a case of being in the right gear at the right time.
If yours is modified you'll be sub 4 sec 0-60 if you can get it to sit down. You will probably be able to count on one hand the amount of cars you'll see each year that are in that area.
Also having driven the M5 I found that changing gear in the Tuscan is 10 times smoother than what you get in the M5. Even in soft drive mode it was like having your 17 year old kid in the driving seat trying to change gear for the first time. Juddery as buggery

It always amazes me how ropey (in terms of power output) some S6 engine were when they left the factory and the gains to be made from some very minor tinkering, (remaps and de-cats).
Also very surprising how a 10 year old TVR can keep up with 70-80k worth of high tech deutsche car which in reality are light years ahead of the tiv's in R&D.
Power to weight is the way forward!

this is my point. from 70 ish to 140 ish (kiloleptons of course) on a motorway the tuscan was more than a match for the 500 bhp M5. So this is scenario is less power to weight and more power to aerodynamics. Given the M5 is limited to 155, that's pretty much all it's got. From 155 onwards its tuscan all the way!
Mine, like quite a few enthuisiasts M5's, has been deristricted and is capable of nearly 200 MPH as can be seen on You Tube or wherever where the speedo is seen at over 200. The M5 is in it's elements from 80 to 140 are you certain the driver of the M5 had it in "M" mode utilising all the 500 BHP or the default setting which is 400BHP? None of my TVR's could have got the better of my M5 at those speeds, in fact by 140 my TVR's would have been fading very fast!

A bit faster or a bit slower, either way I'd be very happy. I was pretty chuffed when my Tuscan 3.6 managed to keep up with an M5 at serious motorway speeds on one of the Thames Valley dawn runs to the coast; occasional traffic and real world roads made it impossible to judge the difference. Very happy with the performance that 20-ish grand buys from Blackpool, and equally impressed that you can buy a comfortable 500bhp saloon for under £50k - if I could only own one car, an M5 would be it.

Mind you, M3s are a different kettle of fish. I've lost count of the number of M3 drivers who have felt compelled to "have a go" and who have been dispatched with consumate ease. My favourite was one young gent late at night who was actually hunched over the wheel and bouncing up and down in a bid to keep up after a blast away from the lights...

If thats the case you've been had on Red Rose TVR's. The 500 Chim still keeps going past that and as for my Tuscan, didn't need to change from third till 125 and pulled the same to well past 160.Kev
As for M5's leaving a chipped and sorted S spec Tuscan, won't happen. The M5 is quick but we're talking about a massive bulk of car against something that weighs far less. The problem with the Tuscan is first and second gear. Getting it to sit can be difficult, but once its rolling it keeps going. There are some poor ones out there, but as a whole I'd put my house on my old tuscan leavinig any M5 well behind. Its been sold and will I'm sure be shouted about by its new owner.
M5's are fantastic looking cars and a real piece of kit so respect where respects due. But you can be sure, in standard 400 guise, they're nothing to write home about.
Holy crap The Pits. Ya certainly have a thing for fast motors after looking at your past cars. Thought my garage looked good!!!
How does the Tuscan measure up? When you were having fun with the beemer, did you give it full right foot action, ie, well past 5k. The Tuscan just screems after that and gets noisier and faster as it climbs. What a place to be sat!!!!

TVR 5000 if you or any other Tuscan owner ever go to the "Ring" take a Sat Nav with a MPH readout, get on a nice clear Autobahn and if possible time the car on the Sat Nav from 100 to 160 MPH believe me you will be in for a shock!
I have not had poor engines trust me I have other TVR owners to validate that and I love TVR's as I have said. I go to the Ring twice a year with a group of very quick cars but over a ton a 911 Turbo is quite a bit quicker as is an M5. If you try and go much above a "true" 150 mph the car slows down dramatically believe me......been there done it!

BTW with barefoot's purchase history and involvement with TVR people I'd be surprised if he didn't have the very best specced, built and tuned engines from TVR.
