Thinking of selling up

Been agonising over this for a couple of weeks,

As much as I love my Tuscan I think I might have to let him go.

Not because I cant afford to run it, or because I have had reliability problems, or I need the money.

Simply because I never seem to have the time to use the damn thing, I commute to london on the train (station is 2 min walk from my house) when I drive to the local office its under a mile so no point in getting the Tuscan out for that. Visiting customers in a TVR is (IMO) a little too ostentatious and I dont want customers to think they are paying me too much!

I seem to be working all hours god sends and the little time I do get off I spend with the GF and the rug rat (no country drives, not enough seats). certainly no time for self indulgent solo hoons or going to meets.

Quite tragic really.

On the plus side I suppose it enables me to save for a Tuscan2 or Sagaris.

I'm thinking 13-14k for my 2000 car, 43k miles, decent (but not spotless) paintwork, FSH, more history than you can shake a stick at, rebuild 18 months ago (possibly still 6 months warranty left), clutch 8k ago, nitrons.

Realistic?

Not enough seats = get a sensible TVR like a Cerb.
Short drive to work - make it longer - we all know its a 40 mile journey when we pop out for a pint of milk in our cars

In short, you might regret it.

If you don't need to sell it, then why sell it. If it's a good one and not costing money (other than tax and insurance) be foolish to let it go. Ask yourself what you'll do with the money you get?? Have to be a private sale, 'cos a garage would give you peanuts without buying a car....Keep it , would be my advice , then part-ex it against a Tuscan Convertible in a couple of years...

I'm quite sure many of us (me included) dont use our cars nearly enough to really justify having them - HOWEVER, just knowing that its in the garage, available to play/tinker with when I feel like it, makes it worthwhile for me and I wouldn't be without one as long as I can afford it...

I know how you feel, I go through this every now and then!

The fact is I love the car too much. If it was worth £50k I might sell it, but £15k? Just not worth it.

In the same boat dont get to use the car enough.

But the return on the sale 13-14k won't buy anything else with the same potential as Tuscan. Having spent all that money during ownership just seems such a waste for little return, unless your a charity and enjoy giving.

Keep the car, buy the GF an expensive handbag, new rattle for the rug rat, and keep them happy. Because the car won't rust and if you have the space to park not likly to get damaged. And wait things can change and may find time to enjoy the car again, could waste months finding a replacement in the future and cost more. Now that would be a waste.

Keep it! Just think about the time when you DO get to take it for a hoon... even if it is few and far between, better to have the option than to not. And as others have said, it's not worth selling it considering the return.

Plus once the rugrat get old enough they'll appreciate you driving them to their friend's houses in it to show off - you'll be the coolest dad!

I know exactly how you feel,ive done less than 6000 miles in 3 years of ownership! With fuel prices increasing, more tax, larger insurance premiums Etc etc. seems sometimes like i dont really warrant such
a great car. BUT like just knowing i can, when weather permits, get it, turn the key and take it for a drive, it takes all the hassle of the normal day to day away for a few short hours. That is why i cannot sell my TVR !!

I think you'll find you are in good company amongst the TVR owning community when it comes to this issue. I find myself in exactly the same situation and, like the other posters, find myself from time to time trying to justify why I have a car sitting in the garage monday to friday each week. Everyone has their reasons, mine I consider a "hobby". It makes no sense on a practical level to keep it, yet I do. In fact, I have three cars and now that I've taken up cycling to my local train station, I will sell my daily runner and use the TVR more at weekends and in the evenings. At least then I will feel that I am getting some use out of it. In any event, I "couldn't" now sell it - too many of our friends love it, plus I'd have a huge task justifying it to my 3 year old daughter and 5 year old son, who absolutely love it.

Echo all the above posts.
Our's has been sitting in the garage for 9 months or so whilst finances have been really tight, costing me directly @12k per year for my daughters Uni, got the car back on the road this month, and last night went for a 60 mile ROUND TRIP "only 12 miles direct" for fish & chips by the seaside, absolute heaven.
For me it really puts the pleasure back into driving and has to be used more often.
