Apart from the cost of the conversion, there is part of me thinks it aint a Tuscan with out a ferril straight 6 in it.

If I were in the market, I'd pay more for an LSx converted car than an early standard one, but I'd pay more still for one with a recently sorted and upgraded (to current best practices) S6 - say one with a TVR Power 4.3 or a Wilder engine (which are sort of in the same ballpark if you factor in the conversion cost for a car to take an alternative lump).

Why would you pay for something thats not proven? (Power 4,3 or Wilder?)

Well to be pedantic, by your definition the only thing that's 'proven' about an LSx conversion is the engine itself...

I know what you mean. But there is another part of me that thinks lots of reliable, trouble free, low maintenance, burbling power is a good thing!

You miss my point. No problem with the LSX engine conversion. My point was that while current "improved" S6 rebuilds appear to be ok, and cars have some miles on them without problems, the same can't be said for your two suggestions.

I wasn't trying to be sarcastic and I dont really care who spends their money on what, just trying to prevent folk going off down a potential dissaster route as has happened previously due to PH recomendations that were without real substance.

So you are saying that the overall package in terms of dynamic behaviour and ancillaries has been proven to OEM levels? How many development hours on road and test tracks to work out the new spring and damper rates? How did the purveyors of the conversions validate the cooling system, underbonnet airflow, the position and fixtures of fuel lines, throttle cables? Etc. etc.? TVR Power provides a three year mileage unlimited warranty, how about the promotors of alternative power sources?

I think the aftermarket is pretty well capable of working out the remaining 5% of development that TVR traditionally left for their customers to take care of - starting from Ground Zero is a different thing altogether.

That, and I see the S6 engine as an integral part of the overall dynamic character of the later TVRs. Swap it for soething else, and the result will something quite different from the Tuscan, T350, Saggy etc. we know and love. For all I know it can be just as viable a package in itself, but unlike an 'improved' S6 version it won't be the same, and one may be left to wonder why one would not be better off getting a 'Vette or sticking a supercharger and upgraded suspension on a Griffmaera instead.

Kind of missed the point again. The guy was talking about engines, so I have no problem with the LSX aspect of the conversion - the rest I dont know and frankly don't care (its a route I wont take).

I agree 100% with what you say regarding the S6 being an integral part of the car. My main poiint was the two examples you gave were not the best examples of improved engines, given the reasons I stated. As for three year warranty...I've just a few month left of the 3 year warranty TVR offered on my Sagaris...

But that was offered by TVR Engineering or TVR Cars or Blackpool Automotive whatever it was called back then and went the way of the dodo, rather than TVR Power, right?

Correct. But what it says is that a warranty is only as good as the company that offers it - it's no gaurentee.wink

For historical accuracy, the Dodo became extinct, it was not a structured end thought out by its owner to seemingly avoid laibility. smile

I have a bdised Tuscan and I doubt I would get more money for it even though it has a bullet proof engine in it! In fact, I would realistically have to concede that I might get less for it.....as your average Joe tends to shy away from things that are bespoke, etc.

There seems to be a bit of history here and it might be informative to know the background.
Now I don't know you, TVR Power or Wilder (and in the best possible way I don't want to get to know the last two!) but there seems to be a theme here where you take every opportunity to warn people away from them without more of an explanation than basically they're not tried and tested. That's fair enough in isolation but it also sounds, reading between the lines, like you have a real problem with either or both of them? I'd like to be wrong because in my opinion any company ( and the more choice the better) which offers a warranteed solution to a known problem should be welcomed.
If there is something more we should know but you don't feel an open forum is the right place please pm me as like I said originally the more information the better. Thanks.

I sound negative on the subject, but I know nothing of either upgrade that would cause me to doubt the product, conversly, I know nothing of either upgrade that would cause me to reccomend it and that is my point. The upgrades are not proven, but are being pushed in a similar way (though not so enthusiasticaly) to the Autocraft solutions that caused so many folk greif not to long ago. My thoughts on warranties I have explained.

To be fair to Wilder, they are going the racing route to hone their product so relaibility should come from their development if they can interperate the cause of the problems correctly and resolve sucessfully.

I just feel its a little to soon to blow these 2 specific trumpets.smile

Ok but I don't think anybody is blowing their trumpets are they? They're only offering them up as not only 2 alternatives but companies who are willing in one case to back their claims with a pretty good warranty and the other which invests in a racing program. Both of which potentially involve a considerable investment.
If I had to be looking at a re-build they would certainly be on my list, but we all have our eyes open to possible problems and historical facts so should be able to make a balanced decisionthumbup.

Maybe not quite on topic, but what would you expect to pay to get the V8 in? £10k ? I've no idea.

Cheers,
