Broken catalytic convertor

My Mk I Tuscan was due to have its MOT today.

Started it up this morning, and there was a shower of sparks and debris from the left exhaust. Bit scarey.

Car failed MOT. Told catalytic convertor has failed and there is a hole in it. Shame as engine sounds great, but I will quickly go deaf!!

Garage claim catalytic convertors are difficult to source and fit. Is this true?

Can anyone suggest a good supplier. How much is this likey to cost?

Is it worth changing anything else at the same time?

i'd be worried that the bits had been sucked into the engine.

decat pipes and a well set up ecu are the way forwards

I would fix decat pipes (Email Ntel) and buy TVR powers ECU chips which will allow the car to past MOT.

All in £475..


Cats will cost aleast £600!

Excuse my ignorance, but what are 'decat pipes'?

I presume there is no catalytic converter?

Will car pass MOT and are they legal?

Where do I get all the parts from?

Will car pass MOT and are they legal? it will pass an MOT if you borrow a pair of good cats for MOT or fit a TVR power chip that compensates for lack of cat. Not very legal but very hard to detect/prove you have no cats.

Where do I get all the parts from? NTEL or peninsular in exeter.

I have never run mine with cat's I keep them in the garage were they are warm and cosy. The car is possible quicker but is definitely louder over 3k. It pops,bangs and even flames if you try hard enough.

Not true at all. Replacing cats is easy and they are available from TVR Power

Blimey O Riley they are cheap. Less than £200.00 per pair. Does that actually include the cat element. Jeez.

Yes it does, they are fitted to my supercharged Tuscan and have been fine for the last 2500 miles. I needed them to get it thro the MOT. Even with the Emerald fitted and leaned off as far as dared, the engine was pinking at the 3000 rpm emmisions test, so couldn't set up a switched seperate map for just the MOT test as I had originally planned. I have a set of decat pipes that are cermaic coated, I was considering swapping around with the cats at the MOT stage.
