Heater working but not all the time

Hi guys
Went up to wales on Saturday for a track day,sadly I didnt have the balls to put the Tuscan on (wish I had now). On the way up the heater just refused to work and was blowing cold air out. I had the temp up to the top and the fan was on no 4. I then turned it down to no 1 so we didnt freeze whilst it came up to temp. After an hour and a half it was still cold. On the way home I again put it up to full temp and had it blowing on 4 or 5 and it was silly hot in 5 min! It has just had a full service so everything should be ok. Is the heater a little hit and miss or does the fan need to be blowing in order to get hot air (ie not on a low setting).

Numerous threads on here about the heater system, I just posted one about removing the black cover/exchange unit to get at the flap motor. Sometimes the teeth in the gearbox of the motor strip so it just goes through the motions switching from cold to hot but doesn't actually move the flap.
I found that mine used to sit on cold even when the dial was set to hot but if you cycle the dial back to cold and then hot again it managed to gain enough purchase on the flap linkage to move it open. Try that for a short-term fix but if that doesn't work you might be in the same position as I am with the need for a new motor assy. With the engine off, ignition on, fans off, try cycling the hot/cold dial and listening with an ear under the passenger dash - you should hear the motor whirring and then stopping. If you can't hear any other mechanical sound then it's likely that the motor isn't moving the flap. If you hear no sound at all then it might be that the connections to the motor are duff or the heater ECU (tucked up under the passenger dash) is suspect.
