Had my first breakdown yesterday. Accelerator cable snapped. Just heading onto the m55 give the loud peddle a squeeze and snap. Didn’t have enough tools to put my repair cable on so had to call out a breakdown company who shall remain nameless. The guy didn’t seem to know what to do so had to do it myself.

My only "Breakdown" was a snapped cable, rang the AA who came and put one of their cables on. Took them a couple of hours but top job.

Mine went a few months ago, but it was a bit more hassle to get it fixed... I'd just changed down to 3rd in the outside lane of the motorway when it snapped...

We coasted to a halt, managed to make it across to the hard should and rang the RAC.
30 mins later the RAC guy arrived. He said he couldn't get into bolted-down bonnet, so the only option was to get a flat-bed to take us home. He ordered a flat bed and went away.
30 minutes later the flat-bed arrived, but said there was no way they could get the Tuscan on due to it's low ground-clearance, and we'd need a special low-entry flat-bed, which he ordered.
30 minutes later the low-entry flat-bed arrived and took us home.
Then a call to the TVR garage to come and pick it up a few days later...

And from memory, the part alone was over £50

Was just about to start a thread on this myself ! Had a problem with a frayed cable a few months ago, ordered a new one from Racing Green and fitted it, no problems. Car went into Dreadnaught for service just after that, and asked them to check over the fitting and play on the cable, no problems with it.

Was out on Friday lunchtime, put foot down and the end of the cable just sheared off, had only done a couple of hundred miles since replacing it !! Was seriously p*ssed off as was in a hurry to get somewhere and had to leave car at side of road, walk back to the house and take the 2nd car. Managed to get back to it later with some tools and crimp an extra piece of wire onto what was left of the cable. Wrapped that round the pedal and managed to get enough use of the pedal to get it home.

Did notice when trying to pull the end of the cable with pliers that it really took an effort to pull the cable. I don't want to replace the cable for this just to happen again. Faulty cable perhaps ? Is there a heavier model available ? Any advice on this from anyone ?

Have a scout through Varleyhds' Sagaris workshop manual.

There is a section with photograph detailing the throttle cable and fixings. Such a simple fix/adaptation and it worked very well on mine.

You can also spend the rest of the day just looking at the quality of his car

So is this a recurring problem? I take it the cable Racing Green supply is a 'standard issue' .. is there anything heavier ? Or is there something I should be looking at fault wise on the throttle end ? Don't want to just replace it and hope it doesn't happen again in a few hundred miles.

Apologies to Graham V for ripping off one of his pictures again, but this picture shows best where to 'adapt' the throttle cable lug. By bending it back only a small amount you reduce the angle of movement the throttle linkage works through, this makes the first half inch of travel much smoother and reduces the risk of fraying due to the free-er movement:

Is yours a MK1? If so I would recommend replacing the cable with a MK2 cable. It means having to buy a MK2 bracket as well but the later re-engineered bracket and cable should prove more reliable.

Yes it's a Mk1, and has had the mod done to bend the lug up a bit to sort the angle the cable comes through at.

What's the difference with the Mk2 bracket ? Anyone got any pics ?

Mine went at the junction of the M25 and the M1, hard shoulder coned off with rope along the top of the cones........lorry getting larger in the mirrors.......

Anyway - I survived

There are a couple of interesting things you should all give some thought to. Firstly, the AA man who came out to see me after I was flatbedded off the motorway said that there is enough touque to be able to pull off just on tick over and probably get into second gear so I didn't need to have waited an hour for a flatbed as I could have got myself off the motorway without any problems.

Secondly, when I took it to Power to have the cable replaced properly they told me that it already had the newest modified bracket and that the whole problem is very common across all cars with cables.

This brings back memories of my first spotted - Mk2 cable snapped outside lane M25 just before M40 turn off. Have you ever tried lifting the accelerator pedal whilst travelling at speed not recommended lol! Still unsure how I got to the hard shoulder.

So will it go again.....seeing this thread a call to garage in the morning is the order of the day
