I know winter is starting to draw to an end and the nights are getting lighter. However I am going to start the job I was going to start over Christmas!

My chasis has surface rust so I hope I can get rid of most of it with a wire brush and then primer and paint over the top. Going to start with the bonnet off tomorrow and get at all the bits I can see under there to see how good the stuff is before lying under the car for days.

sounds like a good project, I love my Tuscan but i'm not sure if i'd have the patience or time to go through all of the chassis.

Keep us updated though, pretty sure my chassis is rust free but if you have success and doesn't take too long, may decide to spend next months holiday under mine as well.

Good stuff. There has hardly ever been any talk of maintenance of the Tuscan chassis on this forum in comparison to the Cerb and Chim/Griff forums.

I used to get mine waxolyed in the early years then Austec gave it their full treatment in 2007. It's still a very tidy chassis as it's still low mileage (27K) and garaged and rarely driven on salted roads, and it hides from rain unless necessary.

actually just to add, even with my chassis, it's amazing how quickly it rusts underneath due to stones from the tyres chipping off the coating and exposing the steel.

thats where the worst of it is around the wheel arches. It looks like it has never been treated and its now getting on a bit (8 years old) so could do with a bit of TLC. I think the only way I am going to be able to afford to run the car is by learning/doing a lot of stuff myself lol.

Following VARLEYHDs tip, I've used White Hammerite mixed with around 10% Black Hammerite to get a perfect match on my Chim chassis powder coating. TVRs powercoating is crap though, pick at it where it's cracked and it comes on in sheets, no treatment underneath just bare metal. Wishbones weren't too bad, edge of the outriggers seem to catch all the stones.
The Tuscan MK2 powercoating is different, more of a plastic coating feel to it. Can't do the Tuscan yet, as its having its bonnet hinged at the moment. Looked good on Thursday, another hospital visit on Wednesday to see the patient , by which time the bonnet should be fully functioning.

My Tuscan (according to the previous owner) was never taken out intentionally in the wet since new, and the chassis seems to support his claims. It really is immaculate with no rust at all.

I'm lucky enough to have a decent garage, and regularly check the chassis for any stone chips. I've found using a dremmel just to buzz off even the slightest hint of rust and take it back to bare metal, and then just a few dabs of Hammerite Gloss Grey leaves it perfect, and is a very close match to the original TVR Grey.

Right made a start thismorning.

Here is the rust before I got started









So go sprayed some WD40 onto a cloth and got cleaning and got to say it started to look a lot better already!





Got as much rust off as I could and paint. Then applied the rust convertor gel stuff. I used a paint brush for this but it was hard to actually coat the rust as it seemed to stick to everything else hehe.







Finally I wrapped it all in clingfilm to keep the moisture in so the gel dosnt dry out. Will un peel it tomorrow and use a wire brush to clear the gunk away. Figures crossed should be nice metal underneath.

Well this is as far as I got yesterday I am going to need to get a small drill with with a sander attached as there is quite a bit of bubbling under the paint on the other bars. Managed to strip one down and put the zink primer on. However it took for ever with just a wire brush and sand paper!!

I use a Black & Decker Wizard with a small grinding wheel..only trouble is knowing when to stop. You keep finding rust under the powdercoating and the patch gets bigger. I've done it from underneath, now the wheels are off , and doing it from above, brake calipers, hubs etc...... haven't decided what to use on the wheel arches....Black spray Hammerite or Black Underseal...in the past it always seems to flake off after a while...any suggestions??.

Just picked up some wire brush heads for my drill so going to have another bash at the weekend (no lighting in garage and its dark when I get home).

As for wheel arches SEM's plastic aerosol range seems a good bet.

I went to Halfords this morning and got some Hammerite Stone Chip Shield (Black), sprayed the front wheel arches with it this PM. Seems OK, but I'll tell you in 6 months if it starts flaking off...But it says on the can, Remains flexible will not crack or peel...so we'll see if it does do what it says on the tin . It's my Chim that I'm working on at the moment, I'll post some pics....(Yes I know its a Tuscan forum, but there's a better class of person here.. )

Let me know how you get on with it as I will be taking the wheels of anyway so might as well do the arches

Yes, I'm very sad too ... Only got 3 holes of golf before we got rained off... so came home and and finished the front wheels...These are the before and after pics..it's a 2001 Chim... but was in very good condition when I bought it in April '06, but had not had any TLC.... Just wish I could manage to get paint on the car instead of me... ..... Time for a now..... Just got all the cable ties to put back now.

wow that does look very nice and clean! My wishbones are just full of surface rust! If I get the chance this weekend I plan on sorting the bits I can get to under the bonnet. Will then get the wheels off and some pic's up
