the book says 10mm up the neck, is that 10mm of water if you hit the bottom of the u bend or the line half way up the pipe. or is that just a seal line thats part of the tubing?
The book is a bit bobbins, I would just fill up to above the inlet to the engine, take it out for a spin and let it idle hot. It will spit out the excess water through the PRV in the lid of the coolant chamber finding its own level.Edited by shep1001 on Thursday 23 April 20:28
That's a good question Andy and thanks for the answer Shep, that's what I've been told before. I'm forever checking the levels but am never quite sure if I'm measuring it correctly!
I've had all sorts of trouble with my cooling system resulting in a couple of hoses being changed and a thorough going over by Racing Green. My latest thinking is replacing the filler cap as steam was coming from there yesterday and on inspection I could see small amounts water bubbling out of the filler. Never any confidence when in traffic and always expecting the car to overheat. Hoping to get it sorted before Le Mans!

The caps are out of the VW van parts bin, cost about £12 I think. The PRV does fail and the seal in the lid can also get knackered so a new lid might do the trick, unless its been overfilled and its finding its level in which case what you are seeing is quite normal.I've had all sorts of trouble with my cooling system resulting in a couple of hoses being changed and a thorough going over by Racing Green. Best way to measure I found is park on flat ground, nick the wifes wooden serving spoon from the kitchen. Hold spoon next to water chamber draw and mark a line just above the inlet to the engine (as if the spoon was resting in it. Remove filler cap and drop spoon in remove and inspect like a dip stick!
I used to worry about overheating but spent 3hrs crawling on the M25 the other week going down to see Karl Baker, fans were on and off like a w
es knickers but kept its cool, never getting over 96 degs so I guess I can put that fear to bed!I think I did over fill it but after a 100+ miles I suspect it should've found the right level it's self like you say so for the sake of £11 I've ordered a new cap. Fingers crossed this works and I'll have no more problems. I find myself trying to avoid traffic and almost getting in a panic when I come to some busy lights which is no good!
Cap arrived from Racetech at lunchtime (only ordered yesterday pm so great service!). Fitted immediately and of out for a test drive. After around 50 miles and plenty of time sat at lights etc in town centre with the fans running full on I'm happy to report no steam and no loss of coolant! Lets hope it's problem solved
im habving the same problem i think.
gauge is now fixed, however i put over a litre of coolant into the tank. now its pissing everywhere, however this could be finding the level as you guys say.
problem is fans are on but my temp got up to 103 earlier! whats the safe level? could this be due to leaking coolant?
i may try a new cap too for 12 quid worth it

Might be air locked somewhere. I set off for Chatsworth and forgot to put my cap back on! noticed before it boiled but have had to add over 1 litre to get the level right and the air out. Try squeezing the hoses with the cap off or using the bleed points to remove any air.gauge is now fixed, however i put over a litre of coolant into the tank. now its pissing everywhere, however this could be finding the level as you guys say.

But then again it's not exactly like driving one either!
