The dreaded wiff of petrol

All, after finally getting round to blowing the cobwebs off my lovely MK1 my first few journeys have raised a worried eyebrow! On occasion, when starting a warm engine, theres been a wiff of fuel float through the cockpit for a few seconds. I've checked all fuel lines and am none the wiser; have any of you kind chaps had anything similar?

I have the exact same thing when warm starting my Tuscan.

The previous owner told me it was to do with the carbon cannister and if you open the boot and release the pressure by un-screwing the fuel cap it will stop it.

I'm going to ask about it when I get mine serviced.

Thanks for that, but it is strange that i've only noticed it recently.

I had the same problem a few months back - it was a perished rubber on the fuel sender unit. If the car had been standing for a while, as mine was, it could be that.

Sorry mate don't know - TVR garage diagnosed and sorted the problem but apparently it's quite common and cheap to fix.

Definately worth checking all your fuel hoses, especially the one that runs to the fuel rail, and also the one from the tank to the fuel pump. Lets not loose another one.

The fuel tank level sender is on top of the fuel tank, which is behind the carpeted flap in the boot.

Don't just check them, replace them as a matter of course.

Agreed.......... The quaility of the original hoses was very poor, and don't last anywhere as long as something like an old ford. I replaced all of mine over the winter, and did some re-routing to eliminate the risks of a fire where hoses passed close to any hot items (Rear fuel hose Tank - Fuel Pump) and securing them to the chassis with rubber clips to prevent any chance of chaffing).

can you buy a complete new set?

Or is it more economical to buy the tubing, route yourself (overcoming the TVR routing shortfalls!) and cut yourself?

What size is the tubing?

Sorry Rob, Unfortunately i'm at work (Working Very Hard......LOL), Can't remember the sizes of the hose, but I bought it on in a single length and then cut it as required.

If you get chance...can you look up the hose id / od please? oh, and an approximate length would be handy i suppose

I know you dont have the Tuscan anymore but here's betting the sagaris wont be any better than the Tuscan was before you did it
