Considering spending a small fortune - madness?
Discussion
So I'm thinking of treating my Tuscan to a Power 4.3 upgrade, a full respray and a few other odds and ends that will likely cost me as much as the car is currently worth.
The finances just don't stack up - the cost could easily be £15k by the time some chassis fettling is factored in, and just how much could a 2001 Tuscan S be worth (albeit a mint one with the usual Raceproved/Nitron/HID upgrades already)?
The only true PH alternative I can see is to move it on (for what will probably be a pitifully low price) and plough even more money into a 996TT.
Am I mad?

But surely you can stagger the costs?
Maybe consider the engine upgrade first, then do a few track days etc with it and get your monies worth. If it were me I'd find the problem with painting it at the same time is I would be worried about marking the new paint and less likely to enjoy exploring the new power.
Also does the engine need a rebuild? Is the cost of a 4.3 worth it compared to the power increase?

You are of course completely correct...but the "big bang" option would make it feel like a new car.Maybe consider the engine upgrade first, then do a few track days etc with it and get your monies worth. Engine is going to be needed sooner or later, the 5yr warranty of the 4.3 appeals.
Sensible option is to do everything BUT the paintwork, as it will only get chipped / scratched / scraped again!

Track it, enjoy it. When it goes pop if it does stick 4.3 in it. Spend on some race wheels and 888's and track tuition.
Agree with that - I'm sure the new engine will be excellent but I really question if its worth doing if your old engine is fine.

Money better spent actually driving it - tuition and track days will make you appreciate the car far more than shiny paint.
the value of your car is irrelevant if its what you want. You could spend this money on any of the cars mentioned above and it still wouldnt have the presence or soul of a tuscan....and with a 4.3 just what on earth is going to be quicker?? very, very little...certainly none of the above in standard guise.
the fact you are considering more power in a car thats already very fast says the alternatives will never be enough...
a 996TT is just not a tuscan replacement IMHO opinion...as brilliant as they are...

Similar thoughts going on here too.
I've had mine for 6 years now and have recently been watching the prices of 360s/996TTs/GT3s come within reach. Given mine's done 40k since the last rebuild it's going to cost some money over the next year or two but I'm just not convinced spending the extra 30 or so k to swap would feel worth it. No real additional performance and at least I don't worry about where I park the Tuscan, given the chips etc it has already.

If you spend on the paint and the engine, 15K is at least what it will cost and you should consider some form of paint protection post spray job. Then would you want a CR box and shorter diff, the wheels may look a little shabby next to the new paint, and the interior will start to let the cars' looks down when the other things are done...
All done it will be a keeper as the majority of the money spent will be lost, but it will be a special car. I`ve done it in the past and wished I'd not in the short term, but years after was glad I did.
A 996TT with a remap and a good exhaust will destroy a Tuscan (even with 430 bhp) but its not a TVR and does not have the same driving satisfaction. Horses for courses.
If it were me, I would look for a late proper spec S car (not one of the cheapos that had wrongs diffs and boxes fitted) in mint condition and play with suspension etc.

I did this, well not the paint bit, and fitted the suspension my self. My Engine was ok, good power etc, but the Valve guides were worn, and oil usage was creeping up, and to be honest, I wanted some more grunt, so have a 4.3.
IMO, with a 4.3, CR box and lower diff ratio are not necessary. I looked into the LS route, great engine, but in the end, I wanted it as original as poss.
It’s a great road engine, car is ballistic, but Very manageable. Traction is not so good now though
If you intend to keep the car long term, go for it. As good as some 911’s are, the grin factor is nothing compared to the Tuscan. Look at it like this, the Tuscan is a Spitfire, the 911, a Fokker Wolf!!

Can you expand on your point about the Cheapo late S cars please?Whitey said:
ah yes, I remember them doing the special prices, I guess at the time to improve sales. So it's a case of buyer beware and checking you have the correct engine, box, diff, exhaust etc before buying!
Did they all have the convertible dash?
Indeed it is verrrry much buyer do your homework. Not sure about the dash - sorry.Did they all have the convertible dash?

You think? Porsche 414 bhp/1500 kg vs. Tuscan 4.3 430 bhp/1100 kg?Of course you can increase the boost on the Porsche so 500 bhp is possible but so is a 4.3 SC.

I did suggest just a remap and an exhaust on the Porker. 540BHP is easy and bomb proof. A 4.3 SC Speed 6 has not been done yet as far as I know, and the one road-going SC Speed 6 has not been without huge effort (and still being owner developed).
The torque on the TT is significantly greater and is where a great deal of the difference comes. Plus AWD TCS 6 speed box etc etc.
(I would still choose a new 4.3 Tuscan if I could get one though...)
but you already know that

See your point. Torque wise it would indeed take a 4.3 SC to keep up with the Porker. The torque on the TT is significantly greater and is where a great deal of the difference comes. Plus AWD TCS 6 speed box etc etc.
