Easy Performance Increases
Discussion
In my youth, which was many many years ago now, the various car mags used to publish articles on what you could do to a stock engine to release a few extra HP, I was wondering if there was anything that could be done to a speed 6 - this may be the wrong forum, but all tuscans use the speed 6 in one variant or another so I thought I would start here.
have it de-catted for a small power increase, maybe 5-10bhp, and remapped for a slighty larger increase, maybe up to 25bhp?? (engine specific) but what it really does is give you more urgency throughout the rev range.
As Graham says, the best thing you can do is have it tuned/serviced by someone who knows what they are doing.
There is the ACT carbon fibre airbox, but to my knowledge they have not said what the actual performance gains are, but it does look pretty!
You could also try Dulfords who have hotter camshafts, but I'm not sure if thats an engine out job to replace or not.
Racing Green have trick headers, but you would need to ask them for any proven bhp increase.
Thats about it without engine work.

At rebuild time better pistons, bigger compression ratio, larger injectors?
Or...if not at rebuild...
Larger bore exhaust? (10bhp)
Decat, dyno, & remap? (10bhp?)
Lightened speed 6 flywheel (meant to be worth 14bhp)
I guess decat, dyno and flywheel are quickest route, maybe 20bhp combined?
Im speculating, not had any of these done YET...but my engine is going for a rebuild shortly

Never heard of lightened flywheels actually giving more bhp... faster accelaration in lower gears through less rotating wight (similar as when installing lighter road wheels) yes...
Im only quoting what i have seen written down
They do say never believe everything you see on the net
From http://www.tvrcarparts.com/pages/partdetail.asp?id...
Raceproved Speed Six Superlight Steel billet flywheels have been developed to increase engine performance. Horse power which would normally be absorbed by a heavy standard cast iron flywheel is now freed up and goes straight to the wheels. Extensive dyno testing has proven to give gains of 14BHP over standard. A39% weight reduction is achieved using chromium molybendum steel instead of factory standard cast iron. Chromoly steel has fantastic tensile strength compared to iron and therefore the flywheel is designed and manufactured using much less material. Once machined the flywheels are nitrided for durability and to reduce wear from AP clutch butterfly spring contact. The starter ring gear is incorperated into the billet to produce an elegant one piece flywheel. The gear tooth profile of our flywheels is bespoke and has been optimised for the Speed Six. Our flywheels are made without compromise to the highest quality, giving your car a crisper throttle response and keen acceleration whilst retaining a smooth idle and superb driveability.

"give gains of 14BHP over standard."
This are only written words, only with lightened flywheel
there will be no power gains acc to my knowledge and
dyno test results i have seen in the corvette forum.
14 hp is a marketing gag!
It will be hard to find extra hp without investing a
lot of money. 360-400hp out of 4 liter is already much
and on niveau of actual porsches, my former 997 had 355 hp out of 3.8 liters and was 7 years younger than my Tuscan, if you have a C6 corvette it easy to find extra hp, she has only 435 hp out of 6.2 liters(Actual Ls 3!),
with headers, Cai and some mods you easily get 500 hp!
But it will cost also approx 1500-2000 Euros!
Best to wait until the Speed six explodes or something like this
and then put a racing green or 4.3 tvr power engine inside.
All others is like burning money and the rest reliability will be
lost i think, if you try to "tune" you speed 6!

Uwe

Thats about 1500 pounds worth of work and you will be lucky to see 10bhp increase from the mods. For performance that you won't notice, I cant see the point. Drivability wise you will see a change I'm sure, but in terms of performance gains, save yer money.Or...if not at rebuild...

So, even rebuild time, no point with red rose pistons, injectors etc?
Hmmm....seems like everyone is saying, rebuild for reliability, dont bother with performance cause it's not worth the money??
Interesting...so we should all spend money on other stuff if we want performance....?
...Now...about this diff??
How much and how big a difference? seen it talked about all over the place... Im guessing it just provides more acceleration throughout the revs but you ultimately lose out top end (no great shakes really tho!...)

i have been driving a lot of nice cars in my life before and many of them had better handling than the tuscan
i think that if 380BHP with 1100kg's isn't enough there's something wrong with your driving skills (no offense)
it's not how fast you can do the straight line but how fast you can get out of the bend/corner (or you must be american)
owned a porsche 993 cup version (smashed on francorchamps) and an esprit SE Turbo (both with 400 BHP) but almost never could get all the power on the road and those cars really glue to the road/track
yust my opinion

Rebuild: I'd go for a 4.3 or something similar.
3.91 diff is definitely faster, don't know how much exactly (John?). Loss in top speed is minimal. Cost about 1200 pounds.
I would estimate that a car with a CR box and 3,91 diff will be a good second faster over the standing 1/4 mile. Top speed loss I think is amisnoma and would actually end up with a car that has a faster acheivable top speed.3.91 diff is definitely faster, don't know how much exactly (John?).
