Steering whine?

New owner - not sure if this is notmal. There is a detectable whine when the car idles that is affected by any movement of the sterring wheel. It goes quiet when the wheel is being turned while stationary.

Assuming this is the pump, but just want to know if this is good or bad? - on a MK II S

Really noticeable on full lock? A general thing: check the PAS fluid level.

Might be an over tightened belt too, as this can make a whining noise.

Thought the steering on a T2 was electric pas like the Sagaris. Does this still have hydraulic fluid driven by an electric pump or is the assistance built onto the column like a Peugeot (I think).

No extra noise on full lock at all - it's only when there is no load stationary in traffic. Interestingly it really only does it "in town" pull up at a country crossroads and she's quiet as a mouse. Seems after a few minutes of temps builing in traffic the noise appears. It's not load at all but I am just a fusspot and like to know what my car is trying to tell me at all times.

This lends weight to the tight belt theory if it's not electric??

Its the electric motor, mine makes a noise and has done for ages. Check the metal straps on the PS pump, they hook in on one end and are held down with a 10mm nut on the other. the bracket had unhooked itself on one side of mine, there was less whine when I sorted it. Try and wiggle the PS reservoir it makes more noise so I guess the brackets must fix the position of the PS pump somehow.
