Warranty. Which One?

Lots of talk to new/potential owners about warranty, but can any one reccomend one they have at the moment or have had made a claim with. I have had several spam emails offering me one since mine expired but none of them cover TVR.

So why are dealers offering warranties with cars then and where are they getting them from, perhaps they are underwriting them themselves?

All Dealers have to offer warranties, so that if anything happens the customer is (covered) BUT warrantie companys will use ANY means possible not to pay out,, They normaly say it is ware and tear,,The general feeling on here is just put the money ( about £2000 the cost of a warrantie)in the bank..............edited to say most companys use Auto Direct as they get 30% commission on all new policys

I have the AA warranty - can't remember what is costs me (£100?) but pays out upto £500 upto 5 times year and is supposed to be pretty flexible.

Never had to use it though (wish I had got it extended to cover my Alfa, could have used full amount every year!!)

Not sure if I will renew it but I though it would be good to take the sting out of a clutch, rebuild etc.

If I ran a company that sells cars, and the only real advantage with paying the premium of buying from a dealer is that the car comes with a warranty, then yes I would expect it to cover the engine for 12 months on a 13,000 mile car. I would limit it to 5k miles and place other restrictions in place. But not having engine warranty but claiming '12 months warranty' just sounds a bit of a con to me.Trixman said:

I had the Autoprotect "full fat" warranty on my Tuscan from Aug 2006 (when the 1yr warranty on my '05 factory rebuild ran out) to last month, a coverage period of 3 years. During this time, I had to claim on a number of engine, clutch and radiator/other issues, none of which were classified as wear and tear and all of which were covered. I estimate the total of these items came to close to £5k, if not a little more.

I won't deny that the warranty was expensive - £1,300 a year so £4k over the 3 yr period. However, by being totally transparent with the warranty company - a process handled superbly well by Racing Green at all times - I did not experience undue issues and my repairs were adequately covered. You can argue whether the £1k net saving was worth it, but ultimately any saving is a saving. From discussions with RG, I believe I was one of the few warranty holders who received a call direct from the warranty company to confirm the nature of one of my repairs. It happened once, and never again.

It ultimately comes down to your risk profile in some respect. I am relatively risk averse, and so not being covered when a proven warranty existed was not something I was comfortable with. I now have no choice (I believe) with a 6 yr old Tuscan, and will now put money aside for the potential issues of the future.

I recently claimed for a clutch on my Tuscan, the warranty is through RAC and only costs around £300 pounds a year. The clutch was replaced as the fingers had snapped which is a failure rather than wear and tear. I would recommend for the sake of £300 quid getting a warranty for peace of mind. I'm covered up to £1000 per claim which would hopefully take the sting out of a top end rebuild. The warranty company will only cover me as the car has a full main dealer service history and has covered less than 100,000 miles - as this applies to most Tuscans I reakon its worth the money.
