Pod dimmer switch

Ever since getting my car the speedo illumination has not worked, i took a look yesterday and cant see any thing amiss, the big connecter is fully in, all conntacts look good etc etc.
However, my car has not got the dimmer switch on the side like the later cars but i do have a spare connector under the cover in this area. The car has also been fitted with a later pod at some time in its life.
Anyway i checked this connector as i presume its for the dimmer switch, its a 3 wire conector and when checked there is a ground and two others, with lights off there is 0v at both of them, with lights on there is 12v at one and 0.88v at the other. Could my non working lights be because it should have something at this connector?
If so im noe on the look out for a dimmer switch!

Tuscan al, yeah the later car had it fitted, i also have the one on the right for the wipers.
S6 devil, nope its not the contrast. The digital display id fine just just have no lights around the outside or behind the numbers.
I had a look at the pod today, i have a plug missing on one of the PCB's written next to it is exturnal potentiometer, pretty sure this is why its not working, late pod in an early car.
